Not to be pedantic about it, but the 80/20 rule states that 20% of effort results in 80% of output. It is not about adding 80 + 20 = 100. Why? Because the 20% is on one ledger, the 80% is on another.

For example, if I look at five things I have to do today, only one of those will be vital. If I concentrate on that one thing, I get back 4x from all the other four activities combined.

Now, the rest of what you had to say I agree with completely, and I am working hard to make it all work in my life and business.

(Incidentally, that's the most important part, but everyone who knows me knows I'm a pain in the *ss.) :)

I love the 80/20 rule. You are so on target with it. It is amazing how it's the little things that make the biggest difference. This years resolution was to spend more time with the family. My kids grow up too fast and I HAVE to make the time during my life now.

Just as an FYI - the 80 / 20 rule is also called the Pareto Principle and actually says that 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes...

Like 80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients

It was not mean to work in reverse (e.g. 80% of the causes, or as you put it work then net 20% of the effects) - that would be counterintuitive...

I've signed on more business in a three-month span of posting free tips on marketing, branding and fooding then I had in the 2.5 years I'd been in business before that, where I'd followed the advice of coaches who told me to hold back on info-sharing.

I can honestly say my biz is living proof that your theory works. I'm encouraged to keep the momentum going, at least "until I bleed out of my face..."

Love the passion, Gary. 80/20, crazy to think the source, Pareto was born in the 1800's and most of the world STILL doesn't follow this. Admittedly, it takes effort; maybe that's why it doesn't spread. And that Kathy Sierra session at SXSW was one of the best of the weekend, bar none.
