Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - Yelling vs. Whispering. Introvert or Extrovert. ...

  • Jordan Drake · 1 year ago
I'm totally an extrovert - but you make a really good point - look at introverts like Ira Glass - amazing content and very smooth - soft spoken presentation.

    Another great video gary!
  • Justin · 1 year ago
I agree Gary, work your DNA to the max. If you show your true self then people will appreciate you more.

I can't be you, but I can be me.

Great life advice, Gary! Be who you are. Wonderful. Thanks for the reminder.
  • Ash · 1 year ago
I'm an introvert but I'm embracing it.
  • Kevin Causey · 1 year ago
I'm sorry, but I think the delivery is not the issue. It's being authentic with content, and using whatever style you have. Introverts have great things to say. Maybe they should say them in a blog, not a video, and certainly not at a live presentation. You are successful because you are consistently YOU, and that's easy for you to replicate every day. Authentic. Passionate. Delivery is just a byproduct of the technology.
  • suikagirl1 · 1 year ago
the BEST and most productive teams/committees that I've lead have ALWAYS had someone who's an 'introverted detail-gifted' person to balance the highly extroverted idea/visionary that I am... You've got to totally embrace you who are so that you can live your best life possible!
  • Swim University · 1 year ago
I'm serious about this one, If you close your eyes and listen to Gary he sounds just like Charlie from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, it's uncanny. Being explosive is in right now, just look at Jim Cramer on Mad Money or Keith Oberman on MSNBC. These guys yell and are engaging. It's nice to listen to someone with energy when a majority of the people are soft spoken or have some kind of speaking problem. I like the extroverts because it helps them to drill the point they are making into your head!
  • David Ray · 1 year ago
Yelling, whispering, introvert, extrovert... bottom line, be passionate in everything you do. While I agree that great content is important, showing great passion for what you're doing is the key because even the greatest message needs someone to breathe life into it to make it truly effective.
  • Slobodan Kovacevic · 1 year ago
All you said is true, but introverts by definition are not as expressive as extroverts. That can be a barrier for creating great content (especially video content).

But even we introverts can learn how to let it go and express what we think. :)
  • Dan Fontaine · 1 year ago
I disagree with your "tone it down assessment" in a way. I believe that if you toned it down 7% when you started you wouldn't have gotten the response you have.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
Gary very well said....too many people try to be things that they are not. Just be you and not anything fake and you can succeed:)
  • elizabethonline · 1 year ago
you know, from a psychological standpoint, introversion versus extroversion is actually an assessment of where you find your personal energy.... introverts find their personal energy and their motivation internally (from their own thought life) and extroverts get energy from external experiences. being shy or gregarious is sometimes symptomatic of those qualities, sometimes not.

i've found understanding where i stand in the two categories really helpful 1, for understanding what gets me motivated when i find i'm not and 2, for understanding the difference between being confident and being outgoing (the former i am, the latter, honestly, not so much).

you can find out more about yourself through a meyers-briggs personality test. it can be Super helpful!

also, gary, you're totally right: it's all about bringing amazing products and content to the table, not how rah rah rah you are. thanks for bringing up this point. always appreciate your ideas.

It's about passion and authenticity. If you're able to share your passion with folks who share the same experiences and believe in what you do, people stay involved with your brand.
  • InvestorCoach · 1 year ago
You said it brother. Taht is great to hear. I am entering the online media realm and have had those same thoughts and concerns. One of your viewes left a great comment on the video... they pointed out that Obama won the election without being over the top... Great points, great video, great job!!
  • Erik Boles · 1 year ago
@Kevin Causey -- unless I totally missed it, this is exactly what Gary is saying here. Content is king, deliver the message in the way you fell comfortable and your voice will be heard. Take my wife for example, she has forgotten more about the newspaper industry and how it is failing than most people will ever know, but she is not comfortable on video, so she is a blogger. She identifies who she is, embraces it and moves forward. This is exactly what Gary is saying and you are saying in your comment.

Now, that being said, Marketing plays a huge part here as well, and you have to promote yourself and your content in the best way possible. There is a lot of competition out there, you have to fight for the top.

At the end of the day, be you, be proud of being you. It is absolutely critical that you believe, I mean truly believe, that there is nobody in the world better suited to doing what you are doing, than you!

I get asked in interviews "do you see yourself as the next [insert name here]?" and I ALWAYS respond with "No, I see myself as the first Erik Boles!"

    Hi,

I've watched a couple of videos of you before commenting and I have to admit that at the beginning it was hard to deal with your enthusiasm. But as I kept wathing I got used with your way of talking and discovered the content and the ideas behind all this.

I think that in the end it only matters that you to be YOU and when you go to sleep to be pleased with what you do.

    Thank you
  • Liz · 1 year ago
The world is not a kind place if you're an introvert. Any cop show, it's the introvert who is the killer. Because Hollywood loves their extroverts!
  • Norm Lanier · 1 year ago
So right Gary. People see you and they think that because you're successful being you that to be successful they have to be like you. Like Gary says find your voice, passion and follow it with hard ass work and the rewards will follow.
  • Charles Ju · 1 year ago
That was so deep Gary, haha.

I've actually been inspired by you to start my own daily video blog soon, but like you said, I am not the type of person to have over the top energy. Thanks for validating my concept.
  • J DUbb · 1 year ago
Well said. You have to be you and authentic. If you are trying to be something you are not it will show no matter how hard you try to show conceal it or project someone your not.

Erik Boles you are right on with being the best Erik Boles you can be and not trying to be something your not.

Lots of people think just because something's been done already don't bother getting into it.

Go to the book store and you'll find that all books about 'marble collecting' have for the most part the same content. What different with each book is how they delivery that content, so if people don't like Gary's style of delivery there is room in the market for people to deliver the same content in a different style.

You won't know how much of piece of the pie you'll get until you ask for a slice.
  • Todd · 1 year ago
Nicely done. Thing is, you might gain fans if you toned it down, but I think you'd probably end up losing even more, plus, wouldn't be true to yourself.. FAIL. Keep it crazy.
  • Luke Irvin · 1 year ago
Brilliant Gary! I completely agree. I've always been more of a quiet guy and this is who I am, this is my DNA. If I do have something to say, I'm gonna say it. But in the end, it is all about the content. And I agree, if you know what you are talking about, that's all that matters!

    Keep being you Gary!
  • @catheybleu · 1 year ago
I'm glad you brought this up. I'm a shy person and I would LOVE to have a show, but sometimes i feel like no one would be interested. and let me tell you gary, I dont watch WLTV for the wine. it's because of YOU. you inspire me, and get me pumped, and make me want to voice my opinions...scream them from the rooftops even. sometimes i wish i had your same intensity, but the more comfortable i become with myself, the more intensity comes out of me.
  • Dale Cruse · 1 year ago
I'm an extrovert - but in a slightly different way than GV. My background is writing. That's what I excel at and that's why I write a blog rather than publish videos. That's just my DNA. Though I'm nowhere near GV's numbers, I have notice an upturn in traffic when I publish things in "my voice" rather than trying to be a "typical" food and drink blogger.
  • Global Patriot · 1 year ago
When I saw Christiane Amanpour at The Women's Conference recently she talked about finder her voice, and then using that voice to report the news, telling the stories that needed to be told.

This is similar...with your own style and attitude, find your voice and find your story...then tell it...regardless of what others may say about it.
  • Wayne John · 1 year ago
I tend to fall on the introvert side of things, but if there is alcohol involved, all bets are off, extrovert coming at you. Same for all I'm sure...

I also have noticed that my own voice garners more comments and feedback than when I'm writing in my technical teacher speak.

Glad I came across your site, you have some thought provoking stuff. Digg it!
  • Cris Cohen · 1 year ago
I think there are also hybrids out there. For instance, Mike Myers once described himself as a site-specific extrovert. Offstage he is quiet and reserved. Onstage he lets loose. Again, though, whatever works for you.

Your WORDS & 'emoting' ring true with Me!...As my 20 yr. old daughter would say "I FEEL YA MAN!"

The world needs your drive & energy, I NEED your drive & energy!

Me?...I'm a middle of the Road Guy I can be Loud & Passionate(Former Preacher whot 'got into His messages')...or I can be Anylitical, calculating & quiet(BUT STILL PASSIONATE)

I guess the question each Man/Woman must ask themselves is this....

"Do I LOVE MYSELF enough to stand up, step to the plate, & BE ALL GOD MEANT ME TO BE!!??"....WHY!? For Me...HE** No!!

As my friend & Mentor Joe Schroeder taught me I desire to be a BLESSING for 10,000 folks(AT Least!!)...I can not do that IF I hide my light...

I appreciate your words...KEEP IT UP.

Being your true self and portraying your authentic self is the only way to fly. I spent years trying to figure out how to "make money" doing this or that. But what I finally realized, was that unless I put my whole self into the game and really believed in what I'm doing, I wouldn't be as successful as I could be.

It's all about authenticity, consistency and hustle.

If speaking the truth is being a jerk,....count me in. Ha ha

Hmmm, 7% less.. i can see you wrapped in a robe, on a leather couch, in front of a roaring fire...(slow monotone voice) "yes, hello and welcome to the Wine Library hour, pull up a chair won't you while we discuss the benefits of fine oak."

One interesting thing to ponder would be polarizing figures. Often, people who achieve success and fame are loved by people and hated by them, with no middle ground. These are also people with vision, people who have big ideas. Examples would include you, Gary; and others like Martha Stewart, or even Howard Stern. But then think about Jancis Robinson, who does not come across as an extrovert. She has built a reputation on expertise and connected with people in her own special way.

The point is not just being entertaining or achieving good content, but CONNECTING WITH OTHERS. If your presentation is boring, even though your content is good, then people will not stay with your site. People can wikipedia any subject matter for information, so why should they get their information from you? Gary has the answer- because he gives his heart and soul to it, he lets you into his life, encourages community interaction and he has vision towards the future.
  • Rebecca · 1 year ago
So true - one of my favorite people is much more entertaining when he's being himself vs. when he's trying to act the right way for his video blog. That is of course, the most difficult thing to do - put yourself out there for the world to see :)
  • zach even - esh · 1 year ago
right on GV. This is a HUGE vid b/c I see sooo many people try to be who or what they are not b/c they see someone else in their industry doing it in such a manner

    YOU ROCK!!
  • Brad G · 1 year ago
That is so true, if what you have is good, you will succeed.
  • Sharon · 1 year ago
Good points there GV. What's important is the content - will you transmit in writing, radio, or video, good content that engages people somehow. Content "chops" = technical knowledge of subject. Of course we can't all be a Shockingly Good Looking as you nor as extroverted and entertaining. The preceding qualities certainly help, though, just on a human level.
  • golfgirl · 1 year ago
So spot on GV. Gotta embrace your own style - and ramp up your content.
  • Donna Jackson · 1 year ago
Gary I think you found the right corner in NY to shout from that's your style. I've watched a few of your presentations with your real venacular. It works as you're autherntic.
Being authentic is the only way. You can only be a second rate somebody else if thats what you try to be.
I like wine, I write about wine on my wineblog. Do I have the desire to shout from the rooftops, no not as loud as you. So I think you cornered that niche and that's great.

I'm an introvert and I totally agree with your viewpoint. I think being over the top is a draw for people especially if you want to make a point to stand out from the pack or if you want to make an impactful first impression, but the ultimate lasting impression on someone is the content of what you say. Thank you for this.

When real estate agents speak of the three most important things determining the price/value of a property as location, location and location that can be translated into web presence/popularity (and business revenue) as quality content, quality content and quality content!

It's easy to keep doing something well when you are knowledgeable, love it and you don't have to pretend to be someone you are not.
  • Sam With Traffic Is King · 1 year ago
I might disagree a little with this. I think if your doing video your personality captures people. You can be an introvert but if your monotone and dry it makes it hard to people to stay awake. I don't think you have to be "over the top" like Gary. But at least be interesting. I think you can achieve this if your an introvert or extrovert. By the way, Gary I though you where a nut job seeking attention until I realized what you started saying made sense. I can tell that if i met you in person you would still be the same "over the top" person. That's what makes your videos fun to watch.
  • Linsey · 1 year ago
That speaks to me. I admire your authenticity and ultimately I believe that it's what draws people. As I try to find my own voice in what I'm doing, it reminds me not to feel a need to fall in line with what I like in other people's work, but instead to find my own unique voice.

Sam with King Traffic - not everyone will be in alignment with everyone's deliver. During personal face to face meetings (or even over the phone) I modify my tone and pace to mirror others because ultimately, it makes them more comfortable. I do think there is a place for everyone and what one person perceives as 'dry and monotone' another person perceives as 'careful and articulate'.

Good, entertaining video; good message; gets good comments. Everyone isn't for everyone. Be you. Be honest. Be informative. I don't agree with Slobodan Kovacevic that

"introverts by definition are not as expressive as extroverts. That can be a barrier for creating great content (especially video content)."

The introvert may deliver the content in a different style. That style may not be as popular to the masses because there's not that edge or controversy, but the content can still be there. Expressiveness is not a requirement of creating good content. It sounds like Kovacevic has a limiting paradigm he (she?) needs to shake up.
  • Chris Hadley · 1 year ago
Simply awesome Gary. For some reason this video really jumped out at me more than many of the others. Seesmic.com has really made me realize how different personalities can all intermix well when sharing ideas.

Some of the more interesting people on the site started out as introverts who were afraid to post their first video. Now we all mix together well in great conversation and thus we are delivering great content. It really is about what you have to say and not always how you say it.

Thoroughly enjoy the energy. Over the top? Maybe, just depends on your perspective. I am more of an introvert, thus I have to go about things differently. How boring of a world would this be if we were all over the top? or all introverted? As long as you produce, and don't harm anyone in the process, what difference does it make?

Gary, you ROCK! BTW, Jets/Packers Super Bowl. Talk about a SB that'd be hyped to the max!

First step, for a lot of people is to learn and own exactly what they are. I was 30 before I realized and embraced that I'm more introverted in certain instances.

People are always trying to make others happy; that's what goes wrong with a lot of people. They try to be what others want them to be, rather than accepting and embracing exactly who they are and what they want to be. I don't know why, because when people are true to themselves, and do something a little different, that's when they stand out from the crowd and people love them, just like you Gary!

    Gary,

A friend told me about you, he said we had similar personalities and recommended that I check your site (and style of marketing). Until recently I have always been the #2 guy. My passion kept getting denied, because of the almighty dollar. The 8-10k a day I made our company from training the nations top advisers dwarfed what I would have made educating young adults. So, I resigned to start my own company that will allow thousands to become financially free. It's what I was made for, but I struggle handling the numerous day-to-day things, while proactively marketing my company. I have been providing "my product" for free over the last three months to gain exposure. Presidents of the universities and high schools I have spoke at have raved at the importance of the message. I know what I am good at and what things I need to ask for help on. How would you market to universities and high schools on a limited budget?

thanks for your thoughts....the chops is really what got me....i had to ask myself if i was really doing what I needed to do? I think that the issue is schedule. You have to use the law of "the dip" and "first things first" you have to have a plan that you can follow. You have to trust your intuition and reject your false ideas of how people will view you (aka, who does he think he/she is) and go full force. thanks again

Gary, this is a borderline “Zen” production by you. A suggestion, not advice, is to place a small red dot (or whatever) somewhere on all your videos to lead first and many episode viewers back to this video so they (if they are in the comprehensive stage of live) truly “see” you!
This video should be shown to all students before they graduate, and most adults.
Now on a lighter side, I enjoy Port, if we ever meet, the menu will be Dow’s 1994 vintage Porto and Roaring Forties Cheese (#326).

Content is king. It's been said before and I'll say it again. CONTENT IS KING! Because in the end... it's those who have something worthy, of value, to say that always stand out.

Life Example: I have a friend who's super nice, very sociable, everybody loves her when they meet her, but she's bland, and a little shallow. Now I have another friend who gives the worst first impression ever, he's very introverted, but full of knowledge. Guess who everybody loves today?

The net, the web, is the same!
