Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - Want to get advertisers on your blog/vlog? Go and...

  • Travis · 1 year ago
That is pretty much exactly what I have been doing with my beer show....are you stalking me???
  • Zach Ramsay · 1 year ago
I remember when you commented on this before... finding those that are advertising with adsense and go contact them - because you have to hustle for it! Thanks for showing us how its done live. I think its always helpful when you name specific sites like you did today. It helps people get ideas.
  • Jesse Gardner · 1 year ago
Watched this live on UStream. Totally rad.
  • scott schnaars · 1 year ago
That was great, Gary. Wonderful idea.
  • shawn smith · 1 year ago
Nice advice Gary. I really like that you called the guy at pubglasses and showed us exactly how it's done. It's all about going and grabbing what you want. Being passive and hoping to make money off your blog without being active won't get you anywhere. "You got to go out there and hustle" - exactly.
  • Marla Bosworth · 1 year ago
Great vlog, Gary! Loved the cold call. As always, thank you for your forward-thinking!
  • Levi McCallum · 1 year ago
Gary, what about emailing? A lot of people I'm trying to get advertising on my blogs are not pushing their phone numbers online.
  • Anthony · 1 year ago
Love that you did a live demo.
  • Ozzy · 1 year ago
    Nice, Gary.

So, once you get some real numbers, you should call that guy back...

Seriously, this is really turning into a how-to stop for anyone to build their own online business. VERY informative.

    THUNDER.
  • Chris Butts · 1 year ago
Nice job, Gary! I sometimes forget how fun cold calling can be. And the Smurfs are cool too.
  • Scaleage · 1 year ago
It's very much a three step process.

    1. Good content
    2. Recurring audience
    3. Advertisers/Profit!

    Awesome information.
  • Jason Harris · 1 year ago
Ok, so if we have the guts to do cold calling - how do you come up with fair numbers? I have a blog with about 500 visitors per day...I have no idea what to charge.

    -Jason
  • Ed Roberts · 1 year ago
I had the email all set to send to my business partners after watching this on uStream. Rock on.

That guy's going to drop a brick if he Google's your name.
  • Rob · 1 year ago
Gary that was epic! Well done my friend.
  • Ed Roberts · 1 year ago
I had the email all set to send to my business partners to show them this vid after I watched it on uStream. Rock on.

Those buying for Google understand the value-add of targeted advertising. You need to show them that not only do you get targeted advertising in the social media space, but you also get INFLUENCED advertising. THAT my friend is HUGE.

That guy's going to drop a brick if he Google's your name.
  • Ryan Bavetta · 1 year ago
    Thanks, that was really helpful!
  • Rocket · 1 year ago
What an awesome "Show me, don't tell me" vid. Nicely done Gary. Now, I just need to figure out how to get 2,000 viewers daily.
  • David Perel · 1 year ago
Great stuff Gary, I know what my brother and I will be doing tomorrow after work! From the Couch is gonna get full!

Thanks for advice (once again, top notch stuff).

    David Perel
  • Jon Berry · 1 year ago
    Gary,

What an unbelievable video. Thanks for the real world demo. I actually put your advice in motion last week after seeing your Park Ave Keynote (http://tinyurl.com/637l3r). You really put your money where your mouth is by not letting a few obstacles get in the way of your presentation.

After about an hour's worth of work, I successfully monetized a friend's show that I am producing for his niche market. He's a magician, doing a show for other magicians!

Thanks again, and again, and AGAIN for the inspiration and energy that you put in every day.

    Jon
  • Justin · 1 year ago
This is awesome, inspirational as well. Thank Gary. You always seem to find a way to help out the little guy and show us the way. You are a class act.

Now just need to have the courage and viewers! HAHA

    Thanks again,

    Justin
  • Cris Cohen · 1 year ago
It reminds me of what I read about how the Dave Matthews Band and Hootie & the Blowfish initially got the attention of the big labels. Basically their independent albums started outselling the major label albums in the local music stores. I can see how grabbing some audience here and some advertisers there on your own could lead to larger audiences and larger advertising deals.
  • Walt · 1 year ago
Gary, there's no need to click on the ad...just type in the URL that you see there.
  • matt warren · 1 year ago
Gary, this is an amazingly practical episode. Thanks so much. It was fun watching you on Ustream during the call. Keep it up!
  • Steven Morton · 1 year ago
    Gary,
This whole series has been awesome man. You're giving everyone the keys to 2.0 kingdom - all the pieces are there we just need to put them together. Again, man -- awesome!
  • James McDonald · 1 year ago
Awesome. Epic. Fab. Dynamite. Amazing. Just some words that some this vlog up :p
  • Adam @ Paw Luxury · 1 year ago
Great show Gary. It was even better watching it a second time from a different angle from ustream. The different camera angle makes it so much better. Ha ha.
No seriously. This is like learning as we go, you keep taking it to another level. This is truly a wonderful time.
Look forward to meeting you in person tomorrow in Williamsport, PA
    Keep - keeping it real.

Another stellar video Gary - well done for such an unscripted segment composition:-)
  • Eric Susch · 1 year ago
Gary, you're a maniac! So you recorded a WLTV show with us at 1PM, then did an interview, then recorded this blog, then recorded ANOTHER WLTV, then went over onto ustream! ...all before WE got home! You're the definition of hustle!

    PS Your store is magnificent!

PPS Wear the hat and scarf on Thursday. It will bring you good luck!
  • grechen · 1 year ago
brilliant. my first advertiser actually came to me, but after that, i became very pro-active about approaching advertisers. there are hundreds of potential advertisers in my niche, and by now, i've worked with many of them. and i've had several advertisers who have been with me for more than 3 years. give your visitors what they want first, and through that, you're giving your advertisers what THEY want - loyalty and sales.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
    Amazing episode Gary. Thank you.
  • James from Babyspot.com · 1 year ago
Great Post!!! I love the thinking outside the BOX..actually for this purpose I should say " Think outside the Wine Bottle" lol

    Thanks for doing this!
  • Oli Kenobi · 1 year ago
Wicked! Great inspiration to call a random guy!
  • Bobby Bo · 1 year ago
That live call was key. Great stuff. Its amazing that there are so many popular blogs out there that aren't working their own advertising.
My little (wine, spirits, food, travel) blog is just getting off the ground, and I have been fighting to get my numbers up. When I make it to 2,000 a day (way off) you know I will have some adds up their both to make some $ and to support other small businesses. Maybe its just me, but I see this whole internet community full of little guys trying to bring down Goliath.

The real question is: How do I get more readership? I facebook, I link, I comment. It just seems like there is too much out there to compete with.
  • Patrick · 1 year ago
And as always, Gary, inspirational, motivational, and above all a realistic guide for small business owners and bloggers.

    Very Nice!
  • Steve Place · 1 year ago
    Bobby, for more readership:

    1) Get off blogspot. Noone's going to buy advertising on a third-party host.
    2) Shorten the domain name.
  • Jonas · 1 year ago
    thank you.
  • Carolyn · 1 year ago
    ....and that's how it's done.

    EXCELLENT!
  • Ben Tremblay · 1 year ago
I personally use OIO publisher to support my website. It let companies/people buy ads directly from you using paypal and it's easy as 1-2-3. You set a price for your banners, reviews, whatever and they can buy straight away. You then receive a confirmation email, approve the thing and it's done. I could throw an affiliate link in here but I'm a good person: http://www.oiopublisher.com/

It's 47$, but made well over it in the first month so it's no big deal.
  • kruszcontrol · 1 year ago
    That was badass.
  • Karl Long · 1 year ago
Gary you are a fucking gem, what's so funny about this is it's so basic. Also echo the advice of getting your own URL, that's the first step, it's never going to happen on blogspot :-)
  • Jimmy T · 1 year ago
Okay, I am way more convinced than before. But, I still think that supply and demand run the show so your Smurf it Up idea still probably will not hold water. You can't just be good at your content, you have to have good content.
  • Korey Bachelder · 1 year ago
That was SO fucking dope! One of my favorite GV's...right now.
  • mjcarrasquillo · 1 year ago
This episode is FU*KING GENIUS! I can't tell you how many times I've done this for the music industry, for similar bands!
  • LucidAnna · 1 year ago
Awesome show. I've heard you recommend the "googling your way" before but now I've really seen it, it'll stick!
  • Luke Irvin · 1 year ago
This is probably like, the best GV moments right now. Definitely going down in history!
  • Nate Moller · 1 year ago
Great stuff again! I love how you do the role play and actually walk us through a real call with a potential advertiser.

My question is, did you get the guy to advertise with you yet?

Congrats to your Jets for a BLOW OUT on Sunday as well! Go Favre!
  • File in a Box · 1 year ago
Gary, you ARE the man! Great video, I am definitely going to follow your advice for my File in a Box website once I have some decent traffic.
  • Nuria · 1 year ago
Awesome video! love it.. I have a small blog about La Playa San Juan in Spain and just got my first sponsor last week..although I don't have a bubbly personality like you, i do hope to be able to sell more ads..Thanks for the advice..
  • Olli · 1 year ago
Aaaawsome.. I been following your blog and WLTV for some time now but this actually my first comment. Big thanks for doing this blog, I really get a lot out of it! Loved how you called the beer guy!

    Peace!
  • MattjDrake · 1 year ago
This is great, way too many people think they can just be passive and let the money just start flowing in. It is refreshing to see someone focus on the business part of all this new media.
  • Ted Murphy · 1 year ago
Great video Gary. There is plenty of opportunity out there for smaller bloggers. I would like to invite you readers to check out SocialSpark, it is designed from the ground to help smaller bloggers monetize. There are no traffic minimums to participate.
  • Andrew Brown · 1 year ago
Cold Calls still have a place in the new social market.
Hubspot has a video where they spoof they don't make cold calls and they sit idly by for incoming traffic. I love how Gary brings the truth by real example.

Would the Apple commercial have a larger impact if they used real people in a real situation instead of personifying the difference with stereotypes?
  • CR Tisdale · 1 year ago
Watched this live on ustream. Very ballsy, my man, loved it.

It's good that you said, 'That could've gone very badly', because people need to know that not every cold call is going to be that promising, which is why it's important to not get discouraged and keep working at it.

I think, if you actually had a popular beer blog to show that guy, he would've absolutely come around.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
    That was amazing, sir.
  • AndrewSansone · 1 year ago
You Rock!!! Thank again for sharing you nuggets of business advice. You're truly an inspiration. Great talking with you the other day. @AndrewSansone
  • @AndrewSansone · 1 year ago
Just do it! Hustle, hustle, hustle!
  • Furley · 1 year ago
genius man. I love the cold call. well done.
  • Healthy Gaming · 1 year ago
    Thanks Gary, great video.
I hadn’t thought of checking those google ads directly, i’ll have to try it!

Thanks for the popurls.com link too, i hadn’t heard of it before.
  • Susan · 1 year ago
I just learned about you...you are AMAZING. Just watched your video on being who we are. Thank you. Gives me hope...be committed and understand that I need to have the Chops to be successful. Thank you!
  • zach even - esh · 1 year ago
oh man dude, that rocked GV! Very cool!

    I like that!
  • Sharon · 1 year ago
Nice gv.com video. Great business advice as usual! You're such a goodie for sharing. This is great for people looking to monetize their blog.
  • Adam Barber · 1 year ago
Love it! I have been starting to contact people through twitter and my website is way below the 2500 mark. After seeing how easy that was, I'm going to stay at it for sure.
  • golfgirl · 1 year ago
Thank you Gary it's very empowering to watch someone do it.
  • Andrew Hyde · 1 year ago
Thanks for this, I'm now selfishly using it to send people to answer the 'how do I make money' question.
  • Kahlil · 1 year ago
    Yo Gary,
    killing it as always.
I will send this link around for sure!
    Big ups!!!
  • Brit Hammer · 1 year ago
Thanks for posting this one, GV! This approach works in so many ways and in all businesses - it also works for artists looking to find people to commission artworks they want to make. It worked for me! :-) It's about finding win-win situations that ripple out - when everyone benefits, including the clients & suppliers of those doing the deal, then the pitch sells itself.
  • UniqueBlogger · 1 year ago
HeHe Only i can say is AWESOME VIDEO :D
  • David Dadekian · 1 year ago
Some great thoughts in there. Thanks, Gary.
  • Milos · 1 year ago
Gary, great impromptu phone call...like the suggestions and easy break down of what you need to do to attract sponsors. All we have to do is go out there and DO IT!

Thank you for sharing what you know.
  • John · 1 year ago
Gary that was the best thing I ever seen you killed it for sure this time my friend. I reach out and have many sponsors for Bloggers School and Snowboarding School blogs and radio. Gary is right it is easy and will get more so each and every time you lay down your pitch. If you don't get the right person on the phone you may get a gate keeper that you have to try and get info out of so Be creative and be real.

Just do it call and find that person that want to promote their brand with yours.

Gary thank you for your informative video
  • Rowland · 1 year ago
    wow gary, you got balls.
  • Chris Jacobson · 1 year ago
    This is awesome, Gary!
  • Jennae @ Green Your Decor · 1 year ago
I watched this on ProBlogger, and you seriously inspired me. I was holding my breath when you were making that call thinking it would go south quickly. But you made it so ridiculously easy that I started doing my own cold calling today. Way to get me off my bloggy butt!
  • LeeJarvis · 1 year ago
That was frikkin impressive Gary. The selling and monetising thing is something that I stupidly have a habit of putting off. Although I'm not ready for it regarding my music blog, I'm gonna watch this vid regularly to give me the pep talk that I need when I do go GET IT!

    So very much appreciated.

    Lee.
  • Outlet · 1 year ago
It is fucking cool show. Big UP man!
  • Gee · 1 year ago
LOVED that cold call haha.. What do you think about using ad networks such as cj.com etc? I have been successful with them for years but also wonder if it would be worth establishing more direct relationships to cut out the middle man ( I guess its a cost Vs. time tradeoff here ). Any thoughts?

I suppose its easier to use an ad network if they already have lots of advertisers in your niche, whereas a beer show may need to reach out more to find a decent number of advertisers?
  • Trevor · 1 year ago
Great work on the encouragement to man up and take the sales bull by the horns. Sales should be enjoyed to be effective. Looks like you wove in a few plugs and nods... more angles than a protractor ;-) lol Look forward to watching more from you!

Time to sell... I am revved!
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
    Gary, one word....PIMP!
  • Emerson · 1 year ago
    Hey Gary,

I'm a freshman in college who runs a small, one man business, and I have to say you have been the inspiration for me getting out there and trying new things. The amazing technology we have today let me have a low cost of entry and I have made nothing but profit. Without your blog and others, I would be sitting on my ass playing xbox all day. I really want to let you know that you are doing a service to the community and if there is anything you need/want from me I am indebted to you. Sincerely. Keep it up.
  • Keith Miller · 1 year ago
Good job G.V. I believe the hurdlle for people is getting that potential customer aka advertiser past Google (you hit on it) and selling the idea of a very very targeted audience. It's taking all the "No's" as a sales person calling and believing the yes will come your way...and it will. The 10% rule...call a 100 people and you will get ten that will "listen". And you know what those are good numbers.

Listen listen listen to those people you call and yourself...Take notes as the conversation goes along and dont get defensive. Learn to accept no...Nothing against you. Learn from each call you make is what I say.

  • Chris Jacobson · 1 year ago

I know I'm a little late to the game on commenting on this post, but in case anyone reads down through the comments this far, I wanted to share MY biggest takeaway from this video:

Having a real, person to person conversation will destroy email any day. If you watch this video, Gary had to hustle a bit to keep this guy interested. At first, the beer glass guy didn't seem interested, but Gary persisted. If the beer guy had just opened up his email and seen a pitch email from Gary the beer blogger, he would have deleted it, and Gary would have never had a chance to plead his case. I guarantee he'll get better results almost every time with the phone than with email or twitter or whatever.

If you're at all personable, and really want to get what you want, pick up the phone!
