Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - Twitter Brings the Thunder with…Search Twitter...

  • HarrisonPainter · 4 months ago
I agree 100%. There are going to be some issues with 3rd party apps like TweetDeck, but am confident they will find a way to bring the ad focus into the 3rd party apps so they get a piece of the ad pie as well.

Social Media is here to stay folks, and it is only going to get bigger and bigger!

I am surprised we have not seen Google make a big play to grab Twitter, but regardless, the folks behind Twitter are in an amazing position to change the face of the internet for a long time to come!
  • Randy Gage · 4 months ago
I don't know that they will create new search customers with this. Probably unlikely. But they are likely to get a fair amount of Twitter users to use the service while they are on. The big problem: A lot of Twitter users are using 3rd party applications like Tweetdeck and haven't seen their own Twitter home page in months.

    Completely agreed! Game changer!

Did you know that the ad that ran before your video was ad slamming Jon Corzine? I don't know if you intend to make a public statement about your politics, but that's the impression I got.
  • garyvaynerchuk · 4 months ago
    Weird
  • wizzardsblog · 4 months ago
I see no ad running before this video?
  • Chris Dunn · 4 months ago
I think search is just the beginning for Twitter... they'll make a ton of money with it, but I'm willing to be there's a lot more to come!
  • cbjerrisgaard · 4 months ago
It will be interesting to see just how far they can take this. I'm not sure I would have been able to make the connection you did this quickly but now that you point it out it appears to be the only logical way to go about monetizing this beast known as twitter. My only hope is they do it in a way where we don't overly notice its happening. Some people have enough trouble as it is with Twitter clutter - add this in and it could only get worse. That said I think its on us to keep the clutter down and to retain focus.

    @cbjerrisgaard
  • houseofdixon · 4 months ago
That is on the money! if they don't at least try that it'll be such a waste
  • brianvanaski · 4 months ago
You could make money predicting the future. I'm sure you're right on this one.
  • im2b_dl · 4 months ago
Think you are right but I think those search ad #'s are going to get stretched really thin if that is the plan because when the convergence of tv/web happens and interactivity...search ads will be secondary...split that with Microsoft, google, etc etc... it is going to get fairly broken up and not the windfall that most are banking on. A new type of search will take prevalence.
  • matthewdlyons · 4 months ago
Interesting Gary. Way to tough it out in the name of delivering content, by the way.

It's interesting to see the progression, or maturation, of Twitter. Perhaps I'm a little more myopic, but I don't know if I would go so far as calling the pathway to ad space 'game changing." I suspect that it may generate some click through, particularly from particular target audiences (read younger Twits). I just don't know how much impact associated sidebar ads will have, long term. I do plenty of searching. I tend to click through the links in my search results 99-1 over the targeted ads that are generated in the sidebar.

I think it would be great if Twitter could reinvent the wheel, if you will, instead of doing what all other search sites do -- produce related ad content on the side. I would be more intrigued if Twitter could find a way to make ads more interesting or palatable. The best sell technique is when I don't feel like I'm being sold.

You've spoken, in previous videos, about the ability, through Twitter, for companies and individuals to have their finger closer to the pulse of their consumers and followers. I would bet dollars to donuts that people want something different, and have come to expect that from a site like Twitter. Sidebar ad placement, IMHO, feels like a rear view mirror move. Twitter should be blazing trails, not merging into an already crowded lane.
  • davidjacobs · 4 months ago
Which is why a Google/Twitter combo would be mind blowing. Not saying that is ever going to happen but Google was obviously already thinking about this when they bought Jaiku but they failed. Twitter may yet someday get bought but if they pull this off the price will skyrocket.

Agree on search.twitter and feel hash tags - #s - are fundamental to structuring conversation and, over time, advertising reach / results associated with key word buys. Wonder if Team Twitter has ability to translate a user's tweet stream into measurable CPM - push beyond key words and into individual value assessment (e.g. @garyvee would be high value to small biz svcs, wine industry, media, etc. based on tweet content and RT and / or follow distribution)
  • MatthewNeer · 4 months ago
Gary you are right on brotha! I've suspected that's how Twitter will go about the monetizing process for a long time as well. The main reason being that providing paid advertisements is the best way to do that without taking away from the user experience of Twitter. A very powerful move indeed my friend.

I think a far more effective way for a brand to promote a targeted offering will be for it to be in-stream rather than along-side on the right rail. In other words, integrate into the conversation.
  • garyvaynerchuk · 4 months ago
    Might happen too!
  • adamstrong · 4 months ago
good idea . . . can't a brand already engage twitter users directly though for free ?
  • bradendouglass · 4 months ago
Big issue with this is do we know the percentage of folk who still use the web interface? I definitely see where you are coming from Gary but our friend, Facebook has done this for a while now. Issue with that exists that there is really no way (IPhone / Mobile app) to access Facebook from the web...hundreds of ways with Twitter. Very excited to see the outcome, like you said the new design puts them in this position...getting people back to the website...unknown
  • Brian Michael Kaldenberg · 4 months ago
    Interesting.
  • adamstrong · 4 months ago
Cool . . . same thoughts I had . These ads will have to be monitored very tightly because of the real-time immediacy that twitter gives. Trends have the ability to ruin an advertiser or make them rich.
  • Colin Devroe · 4 months ago
BRINGING THE THUNDER. If Twitter doesn't sell against its search traffic it would be the biggest "leaving money on the table" ever.
  • Steven-Sanders · 4 months ago
I wrote about Twitter being a major player against the search engines yesterday, but your idea about the trending topics being turned into paid links is mind blowing.

If Twitter does this, they stand to make billions!
  • wizzardsblog · 4 months ago
Are twitter going to be as big as Google and Micro-hoo in the search market?
  • realasave · 4 months ago
Gary, you keep me thinking w/thoughtful vids like this and your ridiculously consistent insight. Damn you, man! Are you human? And thanks to @tannerc for including that death of search engines link below. read the whole thing and it was quite interesting. Gary, I'm officially a perma-fan. I'll probably even buy your book!

How did you get it to rain? Nice work.
  • Chris Jordan · 4 months ago
It doesn't get any better than searching through conversations. Now when I start my Smurf blog, I'll easily find my audience.
  • glassesgeek · 4 months ago
    Ads on GV videos?!
  • Mike Stenger · 4 months ago
Totally agree Gary. It's a very smart move and especially look what Google has done with search and ads. Yeah, Twitter is a different medium but the same concepts can potentially propel Twitter into a billion (with a big fat B) dollar brand.

I'll buy the ads if they implement the technologies, 'nuff said :-)
  • olivierBlanchard · 4 months ago
Didn't you call it a few months ago? Cool to see you were right about this.

twitters big move won't be search but real time advertising...
  • garyvaynerchuk · 4 months ago
    Both?
  • imrananwar · 4 months ago
You make some great point, Gary. But, In my humble opinion, search terms bought as per Google AdWords will kill Twitter's popularity.

I think ONE great opportunity will be for people/experts to answer questions real time and get paid for it (rankings/ratings by users based on previous experiences will pump up people's "answer $ rates") in real time and Twitter can keep a cut. Far better than what dumb Yahoo Answers tried to do.

Ads can supplement value added services like this of course.

Totally agree with u gary - I can see the difference already when I'm using my twitter account re: searches

I think that this will revolutionize they way peeps will do their social media business. Personally I'm 9 months in2 using twitter and these last few days have been my most productive in working on a niche of followers associated to my field - which happens to be wine. Im coming leaps & bounds in mixing it with the other wino's around the world - & and all because of you Gary V - much appreciated

I'm waiting anxiously for this. It will be a major game changer in my business... I would be all over it in a minute.
  • Steve Gonzalez · 4 months ago
I have slowly started transfering my search usage to twitter and bing. It is just a matter of time before all the crowds start searching twitter. Competive landscape is great for all of us (end-user). We are going to have an insane way of searching in the next few years.

    Cheers,

    @SteveGonzalez

Twitter search is great for non-members but why so obscure when you are logged in?
  • Walter B · 4 months ago
I would so buy twitter ads. I mean google ads are great, but my target market is most definitely on twitter
  • Milos · 4 months ago
and this is only the tip of an iceberg for twitter...their future/potential revenue generating possibilities are "endless"
  • joshklein · 4 months ago
Hey Gary, I don't mind the commercials before your videos, but this one was for "Holidate", a new series on Soapnet. I think it'd be fair to say your audience for these posts is the business community, so reality television and soap operas are a poorly targeted fit.

I know you can crush it and do better! You must have some ad sales people over there?
  • HuStream · 4 months ago
Gary Vaynerchuk - Twitter Thunder or Twitter Hot Air Balloon (that needs bursting)

I don’t buy it. Nice sensationalism, but not well argued. This is not the real revenue model.

In contrast I totally buy your “short term” topical high priced comment per your Jacko example. Here you are bang on the money, but I’m unconvinced Twitter = Google killer (as a pure Ad play)

This rant grew into a blog lost. Read on here to find out about Twitter the Swiss Army Knife of Web 2.0 - http://bit.ly/6d2ty
  • theprocessninja · 4 months ago
It's certainly a step forward but unless twitter start to sort out their issues with twitter spam what's the point of searching through shitty content. It isn't a huge problem now but I fear it will be soon.

    http://www.theprocessninja.com/process/2009/07/...

    Mind you, I'd buy ads...
  • Christian · 4 months ago
As long as they don't compromise the social aspect of the site (which is already done sufficiently with spammers), they should do anything they can to monetize. I honestly don't know why they haven't implemented on this sooner.
  • TheDerekJohnson · 4 months ago
It's about time Twitter did this. In my opinion they should have put the search function on the homepage the minute they knew they were going to be on Oprah.
  • Philipp Walzer · 4 months ago
@garyvee knows how twitter will make money
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 4 months ago
As soon as I saw the new home page, I said to myself, "this is going to get very interesting." I think they're aiming to go after Google, but whatever they're doing is going to be very interesting to watch play out.

It's interesting how Twitter is pulling plays from two of the lost lucrative ideas in the internet to date, Blogging and Search Engines. I'd like to see some sort of all encompassing search engine or platform centered around internet media content.
  • JohnHolloway · 4 months ago
I am curious to see how this plays out. Are people that are searching twitter really in a buying mode? I could see people searching a product before buying to see if people were on twitter ranting and raving about it.
