Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - The Thank You Economy. The world of content is...

  • Armen Shirvanian · 1 month ago
Thanks for putting this out there as a video. This is the right kind of economy to have, where actually providing help gets you further along to your destination.

    Good to hear.
  • ScottCofer · 1 month ago
Well said, Gary. I think many of us fall into the trap of trying to create wealth first. However, as you say, if we create true value (in terms of content, customer service, etc.) first, the 'good things' will all follow from that.
  • Chris · 1 month ago
I think you're right. I was thinking about something along these lines the other day. A lot of people are worrying about things like SEO and search engine marketing as ways to drive traffic, get followers, make sales, and build a business.

This is all good stuff to pay attention to and learn, but not at the sake of putting out really good, helpful, valuable content.

There are a lot of people who seem to want to skip a step and get right to the "marketing" part of things.
  • robertgonsalves · 1 month ago
Gary - Also agree and very happy to be part of the thank you economy. I had you sign my pre-ordered book at the Los Angeles Cost Plus tour location. After you spoke for 30 minutes, I wanted to thank you again, so I bought 3 more books for my brothers as holiday presents.

Today I got an email from Cost Plus saying I won a $500 gift certificate for showing up, thanking you, and buying 3 more books after hearing you speak.

Nothing like getting thanked for thanking you. What a world.

    Keep crushing it.

Though I agree completely, I have to disagree that it's not the "new" thank you economy.

It's come full circle coming back, the old traditional way except with steriods like social media, internet, etc.

Before, years ago, many had integrity in doing the work, and looking after their customers. Cars didn't break down as before.

Seen this in 1980's and it spiralled to now, as you mentioned customer service.

What really, really gets me, is how ethics, integrity, looking after customers is taught. When it should be done anyway.

That's the sad part from myself in seeing this. Things that make us all great human beings. Things that we do for our loved ones, our friends, people who buy off us. These which are in our culture and we forget them.

They not new. They just forgotten and circle come round.

Great video and loved the wisdom in the video but it's not "new." It's people lost intregity and instilled greed, and short term satisfaction.
  • Steve Anderson · 1 month ago
    Great point Adam,

I would say that companies got complacent because consumers where complacent...while the economy was hot, people were spending money far too recklessly.

Now that money is not flowing as freely customers are looking for better value. More than ever people need to feel valued themselves and so business who get that will win for sure.

The way I see it consumers are as responsible for demanding good quality and service as much as the companies are responsible for providing it, two sides of a coin and we all have our role to play.

I do totally agree with you about ethics, integrity, and looking after people though, it should be something should be a natural extension of our cores selves manifest in every dealing we have -- whether it be personal or business.

Perhaps it's time to change that old verse, "Money is the root of all evil" -- maybe we could change that to; "money is the fruit of living a passionate and caring life"

    Always enjoy your thoughtful comments.

    Steve

You nailed it. I absolutely ONLY bought your book to say Thank You. I have been watching WLTV for a while, and that put me onto this blog with your thoughts on business/media, and I've watched your presentations. I know what you think. And I got that education for free. And when you started promoting your book, the ONE THING you did that sold me was when you said, "If you've ever liked anything I've done, please get this book." I had no expectation of learning new stuff from this book. I knew that I already had a handle on your views, advice, and the way you think. I bought the book to say Thank You, for all the great stuff. And once again, you nailed it. Damn.
  • Devin Glage · 1 month ago
A good point as always. I find it funny that the "old world" media people bet against the success of your book. My experience with spreading the love of social media has been that when I tell and "old world'er" to go online and watch a video by this Gary V character, they never do it. Now... hand the same person a book that they can hold in their hands, and they will have it read in a weekend (and be begging you to help them setup a Twitter account by Monday). Sometimes you just have to speak to people in their own language.
  • johndurso · 1 month ago
Gary you are right on! The business and marketing world are seeing a tsunami of change taking place. The change needs to be embraced. Word of mouth marketing and social media marketing are changing the landscape of business. Life is about being interactive. By the way I bought the book....excellent content!....THANK YOU!
  • E. Christopher Clark · 1 month ago
It's something I'm thinking a lot about, this Thank You economy. How much of my novel do I put out there for the world to see for free and how much do I hold back for the print version that I want people to buy? Interesting questions. I think I have to give a lot more away before I start asking for my thank you.

I love that expression "If you want people to know how Smart/Great/Capable you are, give a way free samples"
  • Derek Richards · 1 month ago
Excellent point! I bought 3 copies of Crush It, not because it directly applies to my business (however I'm going to try to redirect some of the strategy towards it) but because of how you've changed and added value to my wine drinking and collecting experience and I just generally want to see you continue to succeed. I've watched hundreds of WLTV episodes for free, I've bought cases of wine that I would have never given a chance before and ended up loving them..all from FREE advice, so yes, my 3 copies are a "thank you" for that.

100% true. I wouldn't have bought this book if anyone other than GV wrote it. although i agree, it is pretty darn good. i'm giving it to someone (today actually) who has no idea what to do with their life so i told them they should read this!
thank u thank u thank u for all the content that you put out there!

    Great message Gary.

Reciprocity is a powerful force...when we care and give because that is what we genuinely want to do (rather than get something in return) it's just natural that people will want to care back and give back.

I love what you do and what you give and to be truthful, if you told me you were putting another book out tomorrow, I'd pre-order it even if it didn't have a name yet (and I'd pay good money for it!). I really dig you and so I'm invested in your success, I want you to be around and I'm sure a lot of people feel exactly the same way (the best part is your book actually kicks ass).

I work with the company SendOutCards and the CEO of that company powerfully believes in appreciating people, acknowledging people, and celebrating them. His main moto is that appreciation wins over self promotion every time...I've found that to be true.

I've built 2 acupuncture clinics now and each time I built them caring for one patient at a time. In fact, I've never advertised my services ever, I just did the best I could for the person in front of me and let the rest take care of itself...and it always did.

I now have a website where I keep a record of cards I send out to people just to say thanks and that I appreciate them (http://yourthankyoucard.com), and back in December, 2007, I actually sent you a card after listening to your call with Rich Schefren, it absolutely blew my mind; http://yourthankyoucard.com/thank-you-card-jour....

“The deepest principle in human nature is the craving for appreciation”
    - William James

I think the thank you economy is upon us and really caring for people is where it's at.

    Absolutely love what you do!

Spot on Gary!! One of the biggest reason I bought your book is because of the massive amount of information you put out for those who listen. If you came out and gave us 20% and said, "hey, this is just a taste but if you want more buy my book," not only would I have probably passed on it but I probably wouldn't listen anymore. I finished reading the book about a week ago and after I finished it I thought to myself, he could have given out this information verbatim for free and I would still have bought the book. Thank you for inspiring and informing!

Wouldn't buy a book because you give away too much fee content huh?...That's funny. I bought the book and the vook - and Gary...Thank You.

(I can't remember the last time thanking someone for taking my money felt so good....and I LOVE IT!)

Only learned of you recently Gary.

This is totally true. Its the reason I pre-ordered the book. Truth is when I read Crush It, most of the content I had already seen on the video blogs etc, but plain and simple Gary's advice has made me money and inspired me to do more things that I am having a blast doing. I recommend his book to people so they can get it all in one place and not have to hunt for it on the web.

Great stuff as usual. That is the reason we decided to do the multiple book deal with Gary. Crush it is obviously worth picking up, more importantly it is worth spreading to those who don't get it yet.

Oh and you can buy a few and hop on a conference call for Gary to answer your biz questions right here: http://www.therisetothetop.com/crush-it.php

GARY, I could not agree with you more. I knew I was going to buy your book the day you announced you were writing one. You could write a book about Root Beer and I would buy it the first day it came out because you have impacted my life and made my hustle better. You're like part of the Family. And if there is one thing I have learned from WLTV, it's Love Your Fam! I have so much love for you Gary, thanks so much for every single video, and every single tweet and every single email and tumblr update.

I don't even like wine and I keep coming back to WLTV because of you dude.

    Keep it up.

    Love this.

I bought Crush It for the reasons you mentioned - and I've bought a lot of other stuff for those reasons as well. I love supporting people who are bringing great value and great care to the people they serve, and I love that people like you are recognizing that more and more.

    Cheers. :)

That's so true. Its the reason I bought the book Trust Agents. Chris Brogan was always very helpful. It will also be the reason I'm going to get Crush It. Have to get my paycheck first. The story behind your success is awesome, and the content of your site is a great resource for me. Thank You!

We're mostly thankful for the funny faces you make during your videos, Gary. Thanks for that post and your books. Actually we believe in the Thank You economy so much that we made an entire website that's ready to play a major part in it. Let the Thank You's begin!

So they really said that we wouldn't buy your books because you give away too much content?? LOL....really

I bought 20 books BECAUSE I am thanking you!!

It's the Law of Reciprocity bro ... You've helped me so much in the past, that I kinda thought I owed you ... so I obviously bought the book ... ;-)

    Thanks again,

  • jacamp16 · 1 month ago
WERD. It's exactly why I bought the book.

    Thanks, Gary.
  • mikepetrucci · 1 month ago
I have two book personally but have bought and given out others. I also have kinda bought and sold (for a penny cheaper!) about 17 books in my quest to get to 500 books and dinner with Gary in NYC! Started with http://crushit500.com but now I can't buy any more books from Amazon.com so I'm looking at new possibilites.

If Crush It doesn't show how word of mouth can make a big difference then I'm not sure what will. The free content that Gary is producing may be free for us but I think that we all realize how much time he takes out of his day to build up our own brands and THATS why we buy his book too.

I'm pretty young but I still think that having a physical book that I can mark up and underline and highlight is rewarding in a way. Something about that just really draws me to it more.

    Gary,

I was on the #IMU call today and also was thinking about this recently. I wrote a post today about Crush it and Trust Agents - then saw your video so I had to leave a comment (and update the post). It IS about saying Thank You. It’s the same reason I became a member of my local NPR station. They give away the content, but I find value in it, so I choose to support it. If you're curious, here's the post: http://bit.ly/4kuW7K

That is EXACTLY why I bought three copies before I finished reading the first one. It is exactly why I bought a fourth in the B&N and raved about it to a browser in the store (she bought it) and why I am sure I'm not done yet.

    Thanks G

These people lacked the hustle you do. You care more than the next guy and thus won. This is simple stuff but it seems like people still are not listening. I bought BUNCH books and did it for that exact reason. It wasn't cause I desperately needed the books. I have a very solid ability to retain knowledge and thus didn't have any earth shattering take homes from the bool. Did I care? Nope... Just doing my part and giving back to the man who taught me how to #crushit.

Gary: Great phrase, the Thank You Economy. I wrote a piece for Solis http://www.briansolis.com/2009/09/proactive-soc... and mentioned that "I count thank you's, not click through's" - People said I was so wrong, but I think it's the only important metric for adding value to a community of interest.

I see what you mean by a "Thank you economy," but I don't think that's why most people who have heard/seen you will buy your book. I think they will buy it because they like your message, may be motivated by it, find it personally relevant and want to see what else you have to say -- and in a different delivery medium.

Why will I get and read the book? For the above reasons plus the personal connection from having met you in person at the August NYC Social Media for Social Good Conference.

It's all about equity. In business or your house or your relationships. You can just as easily gain equity in relationships as anything. And I've heard you say before Gary something like in this economy I would rather have 1 million friends than $1 million.

    Thanks Gary!
