I love how you brought up it was called Web 2.0. I remember that, killing it in the Web 2.0 days getting coverage on CNET etc.

Keep preaching the gospel Gary - the more you educate the more likely it gets we're all going to cash in on our personal hustle.

Thanks for sharing Gary... I use to think of social media as pepper but recently observing individuals like yourself conduct your business I see how it can be & will be (for everyone) in the future.

    Keep blazing the trail dude!

And Life Changing for the speech impaired!!

Absolutely agree this is The Game!

Also, has the awesome aspect of having empowered speech impaired & disabled to be a part of the conversation in a real time voice in a way they have never been able to do in the past. Has opened doors for work, being an entrepreneur and improved quality of life!

    Love your passion!

Well put. I have to agree with you. I have some friends who "don't have time to play online" and they think i'm really silly for blogging and making friends with people who arent BIG TIME client potential. I guess they are just choosing a different path for their businesses and that's fine with me. I am really happy growing the way I am and being a part of the online community in my niche, I feel like it's made me a better business person. STEAK! :)

Right on Gary, totally with you. So many people are in the quick fix, spam a few ads out there and hope something sticks, that's NOT what it's about.

It's about making an impact, having conversations, talking to your friends, customers, tribe (same thing), and genuinely and authentically caring about them.

I love the "It was called web 2.0 three seconds ago" LOL!

It's about people, and thanks for always bringing that out to the forefront and leading with heart and hustle.

    Peace,
    Scott

I left a company in Hawaii - on Maui because they didn't 'get it'. I think my internet marketing plan called for about $75,000 investment that year to get the ball rolling. This was 2004. They ignored it and kept plodding away at their print media and other things they'd done in the past... Problem was other companies like the HYATT were already leap-years ahead of them online and they had serious catching up to do.

Where are they now? Nowhere - just like before... :) I couldn't stay at a company that didn't take the web seriously. Social Media is now a huge factor for businesses but so many are still ignoring it.

Great video Gary - let's get priorities straight.

Social media... most of it though is "hot air" and talk and doesn't amount to anything. Yeah, you heard me, Oh, it's fun and you can get some attention and feel good but I need answers. Tweets, blogs, webspaces are all conversations that never come to a conclusion. I decided to change all that. I wanted consensus on any and every issue that exists. Answers to every possible question to end the debate. It's done and it's all about answers! Don't go to this website expecting good conversations. It's designed to ask questions and get answers fast. And what could be better. You sell a product or service. How do you know what works? Have you ever asked your customers flat out would you buy this? What color would you like it in? I can tell you everyone that like vanilla ice cream, prefers the color blue, voted for Obama, drinks coffee, believe in ghosts, lives in New York, is 25 years old and female. How many tweets would you need to find that out? So here is the game changer http://whimsis.com

Social media and web 2.0 are really not two terms which can be used interchangeably. While online presence is important it is not the holy grail of success. It is still second to your own content/quality/product/service...so maybe it's more like potatoes than meat. :)

Or the main course, not a side dish? Anyway, great point and good analogy!

    Gary,

I agree with your assessment regarding Social Media but I don't think that many of the traditional media buyers understand it nor do they understand how to use it since it is so new.

Super simple yet so true. I cant wait for all of the good things to come from this game changing shift.

Many companies don't have the horses to run in this race. If you're an older, well-established, possibly stodgy company, you will likely have no clue how to use these new Social Media tools. In reality, there's very little chance you'll be able to jump on Facebook or Twitter and "fit in." My dad completely DOESN'T get it - he yells at me when I whip out my iPhone. He hates the thing.

If you're a company that thinks you need to jump in, but you don't have the right folks on board to help you, I think the move is to hire someone young that "gets it." Or (in a fit of shameless promotion LOL), hire a company like Vaynermedia to help you.

I feel like the "steak" is made up of so many things though, of which social is a part of.

Or to put it another way, we've operated under the guise of the Internet being, well, the Internet, and "social" being a part of that.

The reality is the web is *inherently* social, and given every business must have a presence online, every business is now missing something core if they don't have a social aspect to what they do.

In the ridiculous growth that we've seen the web go through, I think we've confused maturity with expansion. We're still figuring out exactly what this beast is, but I think we can assume bringing people together and giving them something to do is not going to go away.

So, here's to the steak. I wonder what else it comes with? =]
  • JosephRatliff · 3 months ago
Seth Godin said something like this...

It's not how marketing can help you continue to operate your business "as usual", it's what you can do to modify your business to use new marketing (social media).

Not an exact quote, but the point is there.
  • dotsno · 3 months ago
You're too absorbed in social media, Gary. I'm working with a UK company with a £4 billion turnover ($6.5 billion) - they have no need whatsoever to embrace social media, their customers aren't there, their market isn't... not everyone needs social media. Some do, some don't. I think you need to temper your messages to build in some understanding of the strategy of a broader range of businesses.
  • Nathan Hangen · 3 months ago
I'm still not sure what I think about it...I think eventually the social media high will wear off and people will realize that it isn't what they thought it was ("they are who we thought they were!" anyone?)...I'm predicting a crash at some point...

    yeah!

Yep.... I am trying to get this point across to @Scobelizer. This is the next step in human interaction. It isn't a flash in the pan, it's where we are going, and that is a GOOD THING.

Keep on giving Gary, you are one of the few that get that we are on our way to the next level in human potential.
