I saw this the other day, great speech! As for the foul language, that just makes you more "human" :) Nothing worse than a stuck up speaker boring everyone!
  • Jon Berry · 1 year ago
    Hey Gary,

I was lucky enough to be there for your talk. It was incredibly inspiring! Even my friend who is not into tech or social networking was pumped up after you spoke.

Also, why apologize for the language? You're just being real!

    Way to smack it Gary.

    Phenomenal!

That rocked, Gary. I wish I could have been there for that! I was in town and W2E was my excuse for being there, but I ended up being too busy to go to any of the official stuff. I did make it to a couple of the parties, though! And the (awesome) NYTVF WLTV live taping! :-)
  • Susanne F · 1 year ago
did you say "shower bag" what the feck is that?

Great speech I loved it - so true. I worked after hours for 3 years and now I am finally getting there.

    Great talk, Gary.

And, well, I would stop watching f'ing LOST if it weren't one of the five topics I cover on GeekForceFive.com.

    Back to the hustle...

Hey gary, i didn't know who you were before the talk, and it blew me away. Passion and patience win over everything.

It had to have created instant fan fare b/c i've now seen all your video posts and don't even even drink wine.

    Keep up the great work.

So many great things in that talk, GV, thanks for sharing. I've been trying to get a friend to watch you for weeks and this video is what got him on board-- a new member of the Vaynernation.

I love the 7pm-2am thing, although I'm going to DVR "Lost" because watching that with my wife is part of our family time, which is important too, right?

    Also-- The NOID fucking rules!!

Thanks again for your inspiring message.
  • beaulebens · 1 year ago
Seriously Gary, if half of the entrepreneurs out there had the passion that you had, and the vision to only be using that passion on something that they were actually passionate about, the world would be a much better place. Keep it up.
  • Shira Lazar · 1 year ago
    So many wise gems here:

    "Legacy is greater than currency"
    "Stop watching fuckin' Lost"

Love the energy- you can't help but feel completely alive and inspired by this. Now lets all start a revolution! holla!

Love it - thanks for sharing!

That was an amazing speech and you hit some keypoints. People on the internet are the new owners of the world. Also, you're right, get off our lazy butts and WORK! You're not going to get what you want with massive myspace adds and typing about random crap every 5 seconds on blogger, you need to portray what you are about and why we should care. That's what it basically comes down to.

I've heard about your videos, but I don't drink, so I never stopped to listen. But what you're saying here is spot on, at least in my experience. I've been doing the 8-7 job, hang out with family, blog until 2 am thing for two straight years and wouldn't give it up for the world.

A resonant rant, I enjoyed it. The reason why this species is long since due a dramatic evolutionary change of form is that 99% of its constituents believe they are insignificant in the greater scheme of the universe. The individual is in itself a universe. Long live the individual.

thanks dude. you just gave me the fuel i needed to finish a project that i've been working on for a long time. the after hours, missing time with your family gets old after a while, but it's definitely worth it in the end.

    thanks again.

You're right Gary and I do what I love ; so I fully understand your point. I work two shifts: first is computer business, second is wine making, and I love both....but wine is taking the lead! No plan is too ambitious, no challenge is too big when you aim at what you love and you deeply know you're right. Here harvest is starting, so I got to meet with another great guy I much appreciate and you know: Super-D!
Great fun for the coming weeks!
    Cheers,
    Philippe.

PS: Keep working that hard for us, the "old-world" is watching you...and we like you're stuff (at least I do)!

Dude, totally love it, great speech!

It is all about the passion... and if you have excuses then you don't have the passion. I got my current job by moonlighting and putting that energy out there.. The job was not handed to me, but it would not have progressed with out all the attention and time I put into what I love doing!

I just had my whole class watch your video a few hours ago - now they know what do in a vertical market :)
  • Bryan Russell · 1 year ago
    Gary,
First of all, holy shit you are my twin brother from a different mother. I am a fireman in Southern California and my career has stagnated because I am such a loud, in your face, opinionated, shit stirrer. I can tell you many stories about how I kicked out my own career ladder by saying what is on my mind before using my internal conformity filter.
I am at a major crossroads in my company(side job). I have zero business experience or training other than being a firefighter for twenty years. I floundered for two years then I hired a business consultant. He turned out to be a dishonest douchbag, but he did help me a lot before I fired him.
I think I have a great niche market that has not been tapped yet. I am in the company of giants but I seriously love doing a dating website. Hearing all of the great stories of love found via my site is really cool.
I just launched a brand new version of my site which I think is awesome. I am doing all the social media stuff and that has been great. I just want to get my brand out there.
I don't really have a question other that do you have any suggestions, criticism, encouragement, or links. I'm really sorry to ramble, I just watched your web 2.0 video and my business blood is pumping.

Thanks for your valuable time, Bryan

Way to bring it AGAIN, Gary. I wish I was there. One of these days I will meet you in person.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all did what we loved? I'm doing it. Life is too short for anything less...

    Gary,

First time seeing you today. I watched your web 2.0 expo speech and I love your energy and the message you are putting out there.

My name is Marni and I am the owner and creator of The Wing Girl Method which is a coaching educational service for single men. Basically I pick up women for men and provide them with an honest female perspective on what women want. My company was the first to coin the term wing girl.

Your speech really struck a chord with me and made me proud of what I am doing. I am following my heart and working hard to help as many people as possible. My goal is wipe out insecurity and teach all men that they have the potential to get everything they have ever wanted with women.

Thanks for having a loud voice and putting your message out there.

    Marni

The first time I found out about your work was that day on that stage - and you so rocked it, you got yourself a new fan here :-)
  • Ted Murphy · 1 year ago
Only problem is that advertising just doesn't work as a business model. The ONLY guys making money in advertising are keyword search and Classifieds.

Ecommerce works (ie selling wine), fair enough. Speaking at conventions and other gatherings works, sure -- but that's just not available to most of us.

The blogging community has to come up with an alternative.
  • Dan A. Root · 1 year ago
By far the most awesome keynote ever by the most real dude ever.
  • Anthony Warren · 1 year ago
Greetings from England. I loved what you said and how you said it. I was fed up hearing people bang on about how passionate they were about this and that without any feeling when selling to me. Then you SHOWED what passionate meant and reminded us what it's all about. Brilliant.
  • Andrew McMillen · 1 year ago
Gary - great speech. Thanks very much!

Thank you times one hundred for doing what you do. It's awesome as you already know.

I recently decided to start trying wines I wouldn't normally drink (because of you) and I found a Cab Sav called Chateau Ste Michelle 2004 from Washington State at the local grocer.

For some reason I keep finding great wines in the $10-$15 range. Why would anyone spend $60 on a bottle of wine?

PS: I bought a decanter and it has changed my wine experience immensely. Thanks again.

Man, I could watch you all day... Saw you in Vegas and you inspire the hell outta me!! I'm doing it, man - gave up the 9-5 and working on me and my brand and what I am passionate about. Every time I see you, it makes working my butt off at 3 am easier. I believe in what you are saying, and I'm going to do what I love and make it work!!! Thanks.
  • Jimmy T · 1 year ago
I hear you Gary about the hustle but I don't think I can agree with your all inclusive "do what you love" and that will actually pay the bills. The hustle has to be towards something that matters to more than just you.

I watch your show first because I like wine. I keep watching because I like you. If I really but in then I will buy wines from you. Until then you are nothing more than a person a like, but that ain't paying your bills.

You have some right ideas but they have to based in the reality of our world. I can't "smurf it up" and expect to have a roof over my head and food in my belly. Maybe, but doubtful.

I love you, I really do. Just giving some thoughts that are coming to mind. Thanks for your passion and hard work. I am a huge fan!

Powerful stuff Gary. Really impressed/inspired me and I'm glad I came across your site. Look forward to regular visits here now!

Good news - I'm doing what I love and hustling the sh!t out of it.

Better news - the speech just pumped me up to work even harder and stay as happy as I have been ;)

Gary: good, GOOD stuff! Inspiring...motivating... What can I say...awesome! Period!

Nevermind the foul language, you hit a lot of great points. People ask, "how do you do it?" "How do you succeed in business, in life?" Have passion for what you do! It'll make the road there that much easier (and enjoyable).
  • Nokia Daily News · 1 year ago
    Gary,

In your speech you said you've got a great big EMAIL ME button on your site. I don't see it. Am I bLind?

I really liked this speech, and I've embedded it on my site! You're backing up the idea's I've had about the 2.0 world! Thanks for keeping me inspired, bro! And don't worry about the bad language. Peeps who know who you are won't care.

I am not a wine drinker but I do enjoy and love your insight and ambition. Brilliant piece! People are very lazy in general.
  • Douglass Davidoff · 1 year ago
Gary, I found your speech thanks to Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.net and Jason Preston of BlogBusinessSummity.com. You evoked Viktor Frankl, the Holocaust concentration camp survivor who taught that nothing can imprison the passion of a mind full of good ideas. Your speech is the antidote to feeling glum about the economic scare ... almost makes me want to say, "what crisis?" Congrats on being so-o-o-o inspiring!

I showed this to 3 friends over the weekend and they were all so inspired. Favorite lines: "There is no reason in 2008 to do shit you hate! Period!" && "Do you realize your great great grandchildren are going to watch and see everything you do" ... Can't wait to catch another Gary talk, you are an inspiration to us all.

My I came across your video casts some time ago. We (our little wine group) have a movie and wine night here and there... As part of our movie-wine night we watch your video cast on my Apple TV before starting our movie of the night.
    It‘s GREAT!
I would love it if you could give a shout-out to Cathy, Lady Mags and Anita from Mr. Love in city of Sacramento Ca... We are a stone’s throw from NAPA... Love your work man.
Cathy would just absolutely fall over dead if you had her on the show; she is our very entertaining leader and wine teacher. We love what you do and have learned a lot from you, please keep-em coming.
Thanks for changing the wine world!
