Here's the thing though--I'm not going to fan something I don't like. And a lot of what I like isn't online or isn't in the "space". They are busy being awesome rather than being social.

So a lot of the times, I'd rather socialize in the real space than in the online space, because a lot of people in the online space are douchebags.

It makes my word more impactful, albeit smaller.

GV. Right On! I am going to be helping my GF's parents with their Motel business down in Treasure Island, FL. I am using FB and Twitter as well as your suggestions. I have also bought your CRUSHIT book from amazon (hopefully, now you will ship me the wristband to Canada ;)...been asking for the two old ones forever now to be hooked up with). Another Spot ON vlog. (although...what IS it with men and bathrooms? I digress.) If people stopped fretting about 'what to say?' or 'how much does it cost?' or 'how long will it take to see ROI?' and just JUMPED IN and - created that content around that topic for which they have passion...well we all know, inevitably success will occur. And yes, it IS a time investment and it IS critically important to not just put content OUT there but to ENGAGE and develop relationships, but in the end it is SO worth it.

I bought a $500 Sony Camcorder and started shooting vlogs for my personal blog (about fitness and health); had absolutely NO intention of any kind of business opportunity or "ROI" and yet, who would have predicted that businesses and professionals would start to approach me - based specifically on my videos? Who would have thought that I would be asked for vlog for other health and wellness companies and GET PAID for it? Doing what I LOVE? What a blessing.

I believe without a doubt that your pointers are THE KEY - among many- to success in this social media space. It is so doable when one is sincere, genuine and passionate. I believe it is inevitable.

valid idea the thing is you had the ability to draw on an already established group of people to market to, your customers, you already had a high traffic website that could handle the demands and you even had a web guru (eric the early camera man) to help you negotiate all these waters. So yes what you say about leaving relevant comments etc. is all valid and great advice but come on man be real and dont obfuscate the fact that you were dealing from a leveraged position, which I will not take away from you, you did work to create. You put in work to be able to have the luxury to "turn 30 and freak out" and start doing a video blog. It didn't cost you 2 cents. It cost you all that effort you put in BEFORE you turned 30 and freaked out and started a video blog.

I'm catching up to all of these while, a bit ironically, encoding a video for my blog. You are completely correct. I try to make a habit of checking out other people's blogs anyways as I think it can help me grow. By leaving comments, I find it does drive traffic into my blog. Even one extra viewer for me per day makes me immensely happy. The fact that anyone cares what I have to say simply blows my mind.

I really think Gary has hit the fundamental point that you need to do it for others if others will do it for you. Giving great comments on others blog (in your niche) will help grow your own. Its easy to get focused on website design and a billion of other distractions when the point is: Participate in others blogs/lives and they will participate in yours.
