Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - It takes 2 cents to GROW a wine show Gary...

  • Andrew Galasetti · 1 year ago
My blog Lyved is no where the size of WLTV, yet, but I started with just $14.14 and have reached hundreds of thousands of people. It doesn't take much money at all. It just takes time, ideas, and being apart of a community.

    Great vid once again Gary!

Another awesome video. I really liked the analogy at the end with the 2 cents to 4 cents.. to a million! Good stuff!
  • David Perel · 1 year ago
    Great post again Gary.

We just released a new Video blogging site today called From the Couch.... it cost us less than $20.

If you have the passion and the need then there is no excuse. You just have to get out there and do it.

Great advice, Gary. Inspiring as always. Thanks!
  • Chad Wright · 1 year ago
I was just thinking about this today. The number one way I've grown anything online is by engaging the community. I can't stand blog owners who don't talk to people on their blogs.
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
Yes, you're passionate about wine, but you're also so very passionate about helping others trying to get out there and get started (minus the fact that's all anyone ever seems to ask you). Loved hearing today's video and that's exactly what I NEEDED to hear for a kick in the pants to get re-started. Thanks!
  • Lisa Marie Mary · 1 year ago
You so rock! (Did I already say that before? Oh yeah - like a million times!)

Really, though, you put blinders on my view of what I need to do next - focus - yep, you give me focus. And spunk!

It's like The Vaynerchuk Pep Rally! Thanks, dude! :D
  • Griffin · 1 year ago
I think my advice would be after being ALMOST 50 episodes deep is that it takes TIME. Lots of TIME. But you know what? so does anything you want to work.

You want to have a good relationship with your girlfriend or boyfriend - gotta spend time..
wanna excel at work? GOTTA PUT IN SOME TIME...
wanna be a video game - HAVE TO PUT YOUR TIME IN!

It's crazy to think people think success is easy and doesn't take time when realistically everything else in their life they are good at required lots of time.

So good luck to those starting video sites :) //griffin

cost of a website? $5,000. cost of me taking the time to leave a thought? $.02. gary vee's passion and expertise? priceless.

Brilliant! Here you go, my 2 cents I leave them here. one step closer to my million dollars!
  • Matthew Scott · 1 year ago
    Gary V.,

    My 2 cents worth...

Have something remarkable to say to a tightly defined population of people who are experiencing an unmet or underserved problem in need of a solution that aligns with your passion & giftedness.

Video blog enables people to determine more quickly if they want to get to know, like, and trust you!

Makes a ton of sense to be useful. Right on!

Am I the only one that noticed that GV is sitting on a toilet?

Regardless, once again, Gary makes sense... and CENTS!

  • Bill Moran · 1 year ago
I agree, but one thing that you didn't discuss was design. I @garyvee'd you a bit ago and said the same. You obviously have a beautiful site. It's simple and clean, but all the fun tools and knowledge in the world won't help you on a terrible looking, or poorly engineered site. You can get away with a lot, with good content, but I don't believe you'll reach the stratosphere without good design.
  • David Dadekian · 1 year ago
Fantastic talk, Gary. Nice acoustics too. Ha! Thanks again. I'm searching for places to comment now.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
love the analogy as well, gary. i think passion plays a HUGE role in success, especially when i comes to consistently creating great content. you NEVER know all there is to know about a subject, and it is your passion for that information that motivates you to seek out and learn more and more.
  • Milos · 1 year ago
You have to start at the ground floor and work your way up. Too many people expect to start a business/blog/community and turn it into a huge following and profits in a very short amount of time and that is just not how life works.

    Well said Gary!
  • KathyElkins · 1 year ago
Such great advice. Thanks as always. Your videos just rev me up to no end. Stand back yarn world - I'm comin' at you!
  • Josh Smith · 1 year ago
Word. Too many people these days don't take the time to dig in and read and comment on all this quality stuff going on online. So much information, so much great input from real deal customers. If you're trying to exploit this shit you're going to lose. Love it.

It will be even more interesting to see where they will be a year from now.

I know I miss the point but what about the gear needed to do a video blog? Those worth more than 2 cents.

    While I'm on it :
    - What kind of camera do you use?
    - What kind of mic?
    - Where do you host your website?

Thanks for you blog. You're an inspiration for us all... ;o)
  • Ck · 1 year ago
Love it. Was on Twitter saw the T-shirt Show was happening...and spent the whole afternoon, til you had to get to the train! watching WL/PDM Ustreams. My first WL episode -- Three Malbec's under $10.

Actually posted four fb status' about WL & PDM - and was thinking it's doing it !!

off to twit, fb, gmail, twit elect, evite

    Hey Gary,

You actually inspired me to finally take the leap on my passion of American Craft Beer! I'm a TV producer who loves beer and I've developed a TV show that no one would air on TV - SO - I find you and a video you did a few months back that basically said DO IT!!! So I did, and things are going well. Thanks for you passion Gary!!!!!
  • Ole Bülow · 1 year ago
Content is king.. and the passion is what makes you go spend the 2cents on every other blog on that subject and makes you earn the 2cents, 4cents, 8cents, 16cents etc etc etc..

another great post gary.. thumbs up!

I hope the next President considers you for the Secretary of the Treasury position.
  • secretidcrisis · 1 year ago
I've been throwing pennies at my monitor all day, and I don't see anything happening!

As always, you find an unconventional way to say something that should be common sense, and it's inspiring as usual.

I guess I need to get over my general dislike of forums.
  • Cris · 1 year ago
You also prove with this post that:

    > It is not necessary to have a flashy set for your videos.

    > Men will sometimes put the seat down.
  • John · 1 year ago
    Hey Gary!

Been a big fan for a while now. I'm 24, from Canada - don't know much about wine except that I like it!! NO WINE QUESTIONS! promise. What I like about your show and you is your energy, and your enthusiasm. You inspire the shit out of me, EVERY DAY!!! it's awesome.

My big question is this... I remember on a WLTV episode not INSANELY long ago that I'll call your 'family episode'. A couple of guys where on with you who you grew up with and are related to you. At one point it was mentioned something about your "real name"...

My curiosity is, do you rock a "stage name" of sorts? or is it a simple issue of just always having been referred to as your middle name? that kind of thing.

My reason for asking, is I happen to work with a company right now that I'm really enthusiastic about - we have a fairly small "corporate structure" and it affords me a lot of flexability. Because of this I have a new project in mind that would be a video blog related to my industry - as well as some other personal projects I'm interested in doing that all revolve around putting my face out there and BUILDING MY BRAND! ;)

Now I don't have anything to hide, I'm happy to be transparent, but at the same time - WHEN my projects take off, I can see how having a slightly "modified version" of my name would be convenient - to keep some privacy, help insulate private/home use e-mail/twitter accounts that kind of thing.

I'm still up in the air on this whole idea, and really wanted to see how you handle it.

    KEEP HUSTLIN!

    - John

ps. keep the GV.com updates coming - I can watch you drink wine all day long and love it, but it's GV.com that REALLY seems to hammer me with inspiration.
  • Dave Conrey · 1 year ago
I love you GaryVee, and I mean as much as I love the Longhorns and Harley Davidsons, which is a lot. I just spent a good hour of my J.O.B. time going through your vid archives and I'm stoked beyond belief; inspired as all get-out, and that's awesome. I need GaryVee on a IV drip just to keep this high long enough to get my ass out of this chair and into a place where I really belong. Thanks a ton.

    Garry,

This rings so true in just about any business model I can think of. It's working for me in the Private Investigation industry - no more yellow pages ads for me baby!

Thanks for the pointers Gary. I started my company cause a video I made got made popular on Digg and I saw the potential! Since then I have learned the importance of P as you call it! Had a look at some of your older videos and although a year is a long time I can see how far you have come since then!

    Teach Gary teach.
No doubt that people have a level of attachment to video that simple words will not inspire.
  • mlewis106 · 1 year ago
Best advice that you've given. It has worked for me, and if I realized that it was and dedicated myself more to that principle, then I'd be doing a lot better myself.

People love getting interaction on their content with content. Not one upping them, but just putting in a good well thought out and substantive post.

It's that simple, yet that time demanding. Great post. I feel motivated to start leaving comments.....like this one!
  • Steven Kovar · 1 year ago
Thanks for the comment on my blog Gary. This post really hit home with me because I'm helping a buddy build his t-shirt company (http://anticlothes.com) and have really been pushing blogging and podcasting to him, with some resistance.

He's finally cracked; even though he thinks it was his idea. :P

    Keep up the great work!
  • Steve Beisheim · 1 year ago
I really think Gary has hit the fundamental point that you need to do it for others if others will do it for you. Giving great comments on others blog (in your niche) will help grow your own. Its easy to get focused on website design and a billion of other distractions when the point is: Participate in others blogs/lives and they will participate in yours.
  • john · 1 year ago
Man I've just spent hours watching various Gary V vids here, on winetv and youtube. I'm stoked.
  • rogergil · 1 year ago
    1) luv the set... I get my best ideas there

    2) seriously good insights

    3) I love how you don't rely on the "big break" mentality. You focus on hustle... can't knock u for that
  • Jude Murphy · 1 year ago
Oh, well I must leave my 2 cents after watching that! ; )
I'd almost say opinion is a virtue but then again most people's opinions are just depressing! That's why not everyone can be hitting it on the nail like Gary! ; )
You're like a shot of espresso to the brain, Mr. Vay-ner-chuk!
  • Chris Hadley · 1 year ago
I'm catching up to all of these while, a bit ironically, encoding a video for my blog. You are completely correct. I try to make a habit of checking out other people's blogs anyways as I think it can help me grow. By leaving comments, I find it does drive traffic into my blog. Even one extra viewer for me per day makes me immensely happy. The fact that anyone cares what I have to say simply blows my mind.
  • Bjorn Solstad · 1 year ago
This is by far the best explanation I have seen regarding how social networking works. I had to reblog it right away!

  • Elizabeth Kaylene · 1 year ago
It's such an obvious thing that a lot of people miss it. I noticed that my blog started getting more attention when I started obsessively reading others' blogs. If you want people to reach out to you, you also have to reach out to them.
  • Brett Owens · 11 months ago
Gary, we're pleased to report a success story on leaving our $0.02.

We went out and hustled - inspired by your advice here - and got a little ink in this month's Inc magazine as a result of a genuine comment we left on a BusinessWeek article.

Josh Morgan, our PR guru, did a nice write up about the strategy on his blog:
    http://donteattheshrimp.com/2009/01/14/free-pr-...

Thanks for the advice, and keep up the great work!
  • Thomas Leonard · 9 months ago
valid idea the thing is you had the ability to draw on an already established group of people to market to, your customers, you already had a high traffic website that could handle the demands and you even had a web guru (eric the early camera man) to help you negotiate all these waters. So yes what you say about leaving relevant comments etc. is all valid and great advice but come on man be real and dont obfuscate the fact that you were dealing from a leveraged position, which I will not take away from you, you did work to create. You put in work to be able to have the luxury to "turn 30 and freak out" and start doing a video blog. It didn't cost you 2 cents. It cost you all that effort you put in BEFORE you turned 30 and freaked out and started a video blog.

As you know a lot about wine, what is the best wine program to study? Court of sommeliers or Certificate Specialist of wine? Does one hold more esteem?
    Thanks for your information?
  • Matthias Rhomberg · 9 months ago
the whole thing about those "2 cents" is about GETTING them, not virtually paying them for every post you make..

originates from the good old times where the almost didn't exist yet ;)

    GV!!

Another Spot ON vlog. (although...what IS it with men and bathrooms? I digress.) If people stopped fretting about 'what to say?' or 'how much does it cost?' or 'how long will it take to see ROI?' and just JUMPED IN and - created that content around that topic for which they have passion...well we all know, inevitably success will occur. And yes, it IS a time investment and it IS critically important to not just put content OUT there but to ENGAGE and develop relationships, but in the end it is SO worth it.

I bought a $500 Sony Camcorder and started shooting vlogs for my personal blog (about fitness and health); had absolutely NO intention of any kind of business opportunity or "ROI" and yet, who would have predicted that businesses and professionals would start to approach me - based specifically on my videos? Who would have thought that I would be asked for vlog for other health and wellness companies and GET PAID for it? Doing what I LOVE? What a blessing.

I believe without a doubt that your pointers are THE KEY - among many- to success in this social media space. It is so doable when one is sincere, genuine and passionate. I believe it is inevitable.

As always, you rock my face off.
    ;-)

So leaving a comment here... would I technically be adding myself to the pool of other potential "crazies" like yourself? If so... now my two cents just expanded.

Wise words my man... wise. And if you being to use comments to connect... a way in which I manage mine is with http://backtype.com. Awesome service if you're getting into tracking comments in your field of interest.

    Way to #crushit Gary.

GV. Right On! I am going to be helping my GF's parents with their Motel business down in Treasure Island, FL. I am using FB and Twitter as well as your suggestions. I have also bought your CRUSHIT book from amazon (hopefully, now you will ship me the wristband to Canada ;)...been asking for the two old ones forever now to be hooked up with). So I am hoping I can help them bank in. This will help me grow my business web idea that I have. You have definitely been inspirational and really got me passionate about personal success being the new age business man.

Here's the thing though--I'm not going to fan something I don't like. And a lot of what I like isn't online or isn't in the "space". They are busy being awesome rather than being social.

So a lot of the times, I'd rather socialize in the real space than in the online space, because a lot of people in the online space are douchebags.

It makes my word more impactful, albeit smaller.
