You continue to be a huge inspiration to me. Thank you for taking the time to connect with your audience.

Excellent blog!! We are NOT one-dimensional but gems with many facets! Shine through them ALL!!! And be passionate about who you are!
  • KrisC · 1 year ago
That's awesome Gary. I've been feeling intimidated by my own desire to do something I do not normally do in business, but am laboring to move forward on it anyway. Once again, a timely message for me in my life, which is why you are THE MAN. :-)))))
  • Chris Hadley · 1 year ago
Great advice as always. One thing that is so important, in my opinion, is embracing the fact that we are constantly changing. The things I enjoy today are completely different than what I enjoyed a few years ago.

I never let people define me. That is probably the reason why I didn't have the most friends in the world in High School. I have also had people telling me to make my blog more focused or try to find a topic that will bring in more visitors. That isn't me, though, so it continues to be a random collection of my thoughts.

I'm loving the frequency of your videos lately. Keep up the great work!
  • Adam Teece · 1 year ago
See this is the kind of stuff I have been telling my friends. They all believe they are stuck in just their one job and can't have anything better unless they get a "break." I'm business partners in a Real Estate Investing business, but there is no way I will only be the Real Estate guy. I would love to get to the point where I know enough and enough people know me enough to consider me an expert, but it won't be the only thing I am an expert of. I can't wait to get my podcast going. Just ironing out the few final details and then we will be recording our promo and first episode. It's all about success for us geeks and nerds out there. People who love Star Trek or Star Wars, play Dungeons and Dragons, or any gamer. It's for anyone who thinks that maybe they aren't cool because they like something that isn't mainstream. Thanks so much for being a great inspiration.

    Gary,

I started watching Wine Library, found it informative and entertaining. I found your site, and am rather blown away.

I appreciate the time you put into real world answers.

Since watching your videos, I've sat back many times and thought, dude, that makes total sense. I wish I had someone like you in my life growing up.

    Kind regards
  • Auggie4000 · 1 year ago
Gary, You truly are awesome! I've been watching your videos for some time now and I just wanted you to know, I'm a fan! Thanks for being YOU.

    Just simply - Thank You!

It's great to have people like you that just speak so positivity to all of us out on the web that feel like we're struggling with ourself and how that relates to our own businesses.

Cheers, Gary, I've really enjoyed your video posts these last couple of days. They remind me a lot of some advice I took to heart when I was in university, that you should get in the habit of really diving into a new subject, even if it is not something directly related to the thing you need to be studying for, it will raise your energy level and get you into the habit of absorbing new things and keep you moving. SSo if you have a side interest that you learn to get really into you can develop good habits for when it's time to tackle the less exciting stuff later on.

Good stuff Gary! I think I am going to require my teenage boys to start watching this everyday! Question: who are your mentors?

    ***Important Safety Tip, Egon***

An important part of executing on being you is shutting out the negative influences but BE CAREFUL not to categorize anybody who rejects your ideas as negative influences.

Case-in-point (and a real life example from yours truly): if an immediate family member *cough* your wife *cough* tells you that quitting your 9-5 and going full time on your own is a bad idea - take that advice to heart. There are some people in your 'inner circle' who are giving you advice with your own well being in mind, irrespective of the idea.

Advice that is contrary to your idea shouldn't always be dismissed.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Gary, you are like a force of nature sometimes with your passion! Well put video blog - people try and do this all the time with me. As soon as you become pretty good at something all of the sudden you are the guy and that's it in people's minds.

People resist so much when you decide to move from whatever category they tried to stick you in.

Great point Gary. I agree 200%. Be a Renaissance Man or Woman. It is at the pinnacle of human culture and civilation.

Yeah! Do your own thing and make it happen. Haters and people who try to put you down or limit you in some way will always be around. It's up to you to not let them succeed. Great video Gary!

    Gary,

On this day we need to reflect on the events of 9/11/01. We need as a nation to define who we are as individuals and as Americans.

We also need to see how we are affecting our goals for ourselves as well. People think I'm nuts to take a week's vacation from my FT job and go to a trade show to kickup my freelance gig. NUTS to them!

Go after what you want to achieve your goals. Only do one thing... be respectful on the way. Treat others as you want to be treated, because YOU are responsible for your actions.
  • Tim · 1 year ago
Good thought! We can try to be someone else, but wearing a mask will eventually get tiring and old. BE real. BE yourself. That does not mean one thing for the rest of your life. Excellent encouragement man!
  • Drake · 1 year ago
    Gary,

Bring the heat! I love it. For anyone wanting to explore more on multi-faceted, passionate, engaged living, check out Lobenstein's "Renaissance Soul." On Amazon. Revel in the power of NOT being single-threaded, so to speak.

    Cheers,

Gary: I enjoyed your comments about Ch. De Fargues. I have long been a fan and you are correct, in some past vintages, it has surpassed d'Yquem in quality. Another great wine you may have tried is also from Lur Saluce's. It is a dry sauternes call Ch. Y. It is fabulous with fish, cheese but very, very powerful and needs many years of bottle aging. I am looking for this wine as I write but have not found it.
As a side note, you referred to the de Fargues repeatedly as a "sauterne" it is not. Sauterne referes to the the jug quality of wine produced in the US. "Sauternes" as you know is the region that can and has produced liquid gold.
    Keep up the great work.

You're right. I was gonna say the same thing and kind of did not dare. I have a law degree, speak three langauges, know carp lot about soccer, boxing, history, politics, cooking, etc and I can't imagine being any other way. You inspire me to try to put together a career out of these things. Keep the good work up, Gary!

dude that was exactly what I needed to hear! I've been struggling with this idea of pursuing one of my passions or the other. I happen to love personal growth and development, but I also love online business, social media, and that whole world. I've been afraid about trying to do both, because of this crappy idea that we can only live in one world and be one thing. F*** that. You just sold me on me being me. (or you helped me sell myself? whatever)

    Thanks!
  • Du B · 1 year ago
nice. amazingly intense. i follow you on twitter but had never really explored the @garyvee world. thank you for putting that out there. i find it fascinating how many combinations of cognitive skills create unique abilities. go wine guy. so, what else do you like to do?

"I believe you've been placed on the path of many, for your gift is one of a kind."

Getting to be who you are is so difficult in a world where everyone expects you to fit in. I always hit the wall when I tell my friends what I like and how much they don't fit together when considering stereotypes.

I've been hitting your website randomly, but I'll have to subscrire to see more.

New subscriber here! Blown away man, simply blown away.

I think people who tell you to "stick to your thing" are afraid you will question their own expertise or tread upon their business areas. I hate one dimensional and refuse to stay that way.

    Gary,
this is SO on the button; this is SO music to my ears; it's what i have been living and breathing since working for myself. Doing my own thing and eschewing being pigeonholed along the way.
We are so on the same wavelength - this is what my new book 'Juggle!' (out 2009) is all about, and of course, featuring contributions from Gary V!
all the best from the UK,

I just finished watching the Keynote from the New Media Expo. I have to say, for the first time in my 30 years of life, I have heroes. People like Gary & Kevin Rose & Adelson.

20 years from now, marketing books are going to be written about how these guys changed the industry like David Ogilvy and Leo Burnette did in the 70's & 80's.

Thanks Gary - 14 hrs a day and counting.

Gary, just to be different: Who are those, who are showing in the reflection of the window behind you, passing by?

By the way, it's not as easy as you put into words. There's too much work and too much other "things" involved.

But, sure, yeah, go for it! I warn you: YOU WILL FALL! YOUR SELF ESTEEM WILL SKY DIVE!

Evaluate, refocus and try again... The process will make you stronger and more mature. Get set, ready, GO!!!!

While I agree with you completely I want to add that it is crucial to be in a constant state of becoming. The Taoists believe that if you are not growing, you are dying, and thus the way we define ourselves should never be static, but organic. I have a tattoo that runs down my spine which reads "To sacrifice who I am for who I can become"....nuff said.

We are all indeed multiple personalities with an infinite potential to be curious, explore and explode gloriously into whatever rich mixture of colours we can paint as who we are and how we want our lives to be.

    You! Me! Everyone! How delicious!!!

    Big huge warm wishes... Sharon

Woohoo! Amen! Thank you, I really needed to hear that.

As usual GV you are point on and completely correct. We have to CHERISH ourselves and BELIEVE in ourselves for all that makes us uniquely US. And then, secondarily, cherish everyone in our lives for THEIR uniqueness and what they add to our life.
Live Out Loud, and Aim High.

    You Rock.
