Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - Enormous Talent is Not Enough So many people...

  • JohnExley · 3 months ago
How can a team as talent-rich as the New York Yankees continue to 'fail' to win the World Series, despite their enormous payroll? ---> Lack of hustle.

Let's say you have mediocre content but it goes viral...how is this possible? ---> Love & passion for what you are doing combined with Hustle.

How can a 20 yr old student like myself aspire to be as successful as Gary Vaynerchuk when I'm not as talented? ---> The drive to let no obstacle prevent me, no doubter to sidetrack me, and 24/7 HUSTLE in my DNA.

Thanks for the inspiration Gary, you're the man

I know many talented people who can't do what someone who works harder can. Don't feel bad for them either. I'm not the smartest person I know, but I'm trying to be one of the hardest workers...

Beer after work is sorta my business though, so I'll keep that going ;)
  • Charissa Cowart · 3 months ago
This is SO TRUE Gary!! I've been saying this for a while, but no one agrees with me!! I always get "Whatever, if someone is better they will go farther." I just tell them, "No, No, No!" Lol - but now I can respond with, "No, No, No! Here, watch Gary V.!" ;) Thanks for the video!
  • Tom Wanek · 3 months ago
Couldn't agree more. This is a tendency I've noticed in many people I know. I believe that extremely talented people are able to breeze through life at an early age. But later in life, this causes them to become lazy and they are shocked to learn they are not as successful as they thought they'd be.
  • Chuckumentary · 3 months ago
You're right! My talent far outweighs my hustle... Don't really care about sports metaphors, but my "A-game" doesn't happen unless I put in a lot of work over time. And sometimes even that doesn't get you a paycheck.
  • billygadol · 3 months ago
You are so right. I've seen competitors get the better of me due ENTIRELY to my lack of hustle. It's there for the taking.
  • jwink · 3 months ago
Right-on Gary; just look at the Lions Draft under Matt Millen (and Andre Ware was also a Lion and a Heisman winner). Charles Rogers, Joey Harrington, Mike Williams...Success is reached by those that do the "little things" that the average person doesn't want to do.
  • Fashion Luvr · 3 months ago
More specifically it is about making projects & ideas happen. You might have all the great ideas and best plan, but if you can't make it happen then they are worthless and like Gary is saying you will get passed by.
  • jordanmuela · 3 months ago
Spot on Gary. This video was made for me.

I completely agree. Especially being a college student. It's all about hustle. If you want to stay on top of your game. If you want that extra free time to study for a test or schedule some event you want to attend, you have to hustle. You have to stay on top of your work.

I do my best to hustle through school and work about 40 hours a week. Everyone asks me how I do it. I tell them I work my face off and that's how I am succeeding.

    LOVE IT!

I feel blessed to be so driven. Unfortunately, I realize the majority of people from my generation are slackers, true story. It's infuriating, but hey - at the end of the day, more opportunities for me.

This is the first thing I've ever painted on the wall of my apartment. And it's there for a reason

Thanks Gary for another wise and honest video.

Great vid! Completely agree! Look what happened at US open tennis - Federer got outplayed by, I think, less talented DelPotro. Sometimes plain ability to outwork anyone is the best quality.
  • DailyShotMike · 3 months ago
Awesome point. Now, can I please have you remind me this about once a week or so when I started trying to talk myself into taking a break or watching too much sports?
  • Travis · 3 months ago
Why the hate on having a beer after work? Why can't you hustle with a beer in your hand? I consistently work 13 hours a day and come home to hustle my ass off at my computer with a beer in my hand. I might be partial to beer, because I am in the brewing industry :) It's not about talent, it's not about execution, it's about consistently being able to execute your talent day in and day out.
  • Name · 3 months ago
Very interesting point, but I don't think anyone becomes the best at anything without hard work, practice and effort. The people that are the best are not the ones you need to motivate, but those that aren't trying to be the best and are satisfied to be the audience of those that are.
  • theconcertaholic · 3 months ago
I remember on one of Tony Robbins old CD's I listened to he would say to take MASSIVE ACTION - I think thats why my father did so well... while other went to school, took more courses and prepared for endless hours... he would do a portion of that and then just JUMP IN - Head first with a vengence... with that attitude of "no one will do what I am willing to do" -

On another note is your new book available on CD/AUDIO ?

Look into Marty St. Louis and the cup run in 2004. He was undrafted and considered to be too small for the league. He's got hustle.
  • amandahite · 3 months ago
    So. Freakin. True.

All these people say they want to be "entrepreneurs" but they don't hustle or it's out of their comfort zone to ask someone for their business. You can't MONETIZE your talents if you can't hustle or sell.

Otherwise your just in a popularity contest with a lot of friends maybe.. you can get voted Prom King but you'll never have a successful business!

    Great vid thanks,

Gary, I like ya, but I agree only PARTIALLY with what you're saying. Listen, it's not all about hustle. Hustle is too "generic;" the idea that if you just work "harder" than the other guy, that you will always succeed is simply not true.

Missing from your list were all the no name athletes that worked their butts off, but didn't have the talent or natural genetics to make it big.

Hard work is PART of the picture; but you're not going to win just by working a ton of hours. It's going to take discernment (to focus on the right things), pacing (to not burn yourself out), timing (to be in the right place at the right time) in addition to hard work to make things happen.

Love it! It's all about the Hustle baby! There are certain things in my business that I'm doing that are a lot of extra work. For example I host a daily online TV show and sometimes wonder if it's worth it. But no one in my industry is hustling like me. And I'm playing with a lot of the big boys. Thanks Gary for the great encouragement to keep it up!
  • Royce Hadden · 3 months ago
As a Chargers fan, the mere mention of Ryan Leaf's name was hurtful and gave me flashbacks. All SD fans who lived through that era are like survivors with post-traumatic stress disorder.

I think people overlook the fact that a burning desire to put your head down and do hard work is a form of talent. You mention Bowie over Jordan - Jordan isn't the first or last guy who could jump out of the gym, he busted his ass because he wanted it more than other people. It takes both kinds of talent to be the greatest.
  • Wayshower · 3 months ago
I've seen "Hustle" out-weigh talent countless times!

You are so right Gary. Had blog 4y ago , did same thing what I do now (blogging) and only received 200-500 visitors per day! Some said WoW I said Booooo!

I went with new blog that I did it with passion for 1 year (Technology blog) after 1 year I sold that blog for 5 figures because it had 1.2 Million visitors!

Well what about now? Now I have 3 letter domain name blog which i'll probably turn into something gigantic but I am still debating wich route I should take...

Great video my friend, to bad I won't see you at BlogWorld or any event...

So along with the xbox, wii, tivo, you can add farmville and mafiawars, and all the rest of the flash online games.

As far as the beer is concerned: if beer is in a social setting and you're making connection, fine. (same goes for the glass of Pommard I suppose, no?) But if it's an opportunity to burn half an hour doing nothing, then Gary you're completely right.

I heard this expression in Texas: "Working from dawn 'till can't" from farmers. Successful farmers.

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? The hare was faster, but took one too many breaks. The tortoise was slow, but didn't stop for beer.

Gary- One of my first bosses in marketing had the exact same philosophy...he called it "hack through" saying cut through all of the BS, red tape, naysayers, whatever and just work your tail off getting it done and you'll rise to the top. I've taken that with me through my career.

'Enormous talent' is point of entry and proof of existence in succeeding in your profession. Those who have the luxury of choosing what they desire to do, can only choose because they have talent and drive. Sorry to get so fortune cookie on you...
  • JayBaker · 3 months ago
Could not have said it better myself Gary. The key in all of this not only is to hustle and get things going but hustle the smart way. What I mean by this is if you have some spare $$ available use it to speed up the process by outsourcing! You don't hustle, you don't outsource... Then YOU LOOSE!
  • Andy Santamaria · 3 months ago
YES!!!!!!! Gary, this rocks. I know it's true. I see it. Oh, and I'm going to outwork YOU. Bring it.

    Can't wait for your book.
  • pcNielsen · 3 months ago
Lot of truth to that. I love your passion and your work ethic, but at what point do we work ourselves into inhumanity? I tend towards workaholism — or so I've been told — which isn't healthy. I applaud you commitment to family in the midst of it all, but at what point are we over-hustling?

And what are we trying to win, or is that what it comes down to? If I'm not trying to build an empire or make a cool million dollars, is it because I'm not hustling? Or is it because what I'm hustling after just doesn't look like American culture has come to expect?

And FWIW, ad at the end of the video = annoying.
  • Derek Beachler · 3 months ago
If truly... your goal is not to make millions of dollars, or if you don't have BIG dreams (like Gary wants to own the NY Jets), then you should hustle for your goals. But be honest with yourself. Don't use "over working" as an excuse to not accomplish what you want.

If your honest goal is to make enough money to pay your bills, and sit around with friends/family all day... then hustle until you reach your goal. But that also comes with finding what you are happy and passionate about, something Gary always talks about.

It's not about being Gary, it's about being you. Fulfilling your dreams and desires.
  • pcNeilsen · 3 months ago
Are you a motivational speaker? ;p

I know that's Gary's premise, but I still thought the question should be asked. American culture IS generally prone workaholism over relationships, although that seems to, thankfully, be changing among some of the younger generations.
  • Derek Beachler · 3 months ago
hahah No way! I dunno if I could truly be a motivational speaker.

But yeah it was a good question! I was just commenting on it, and giving you my view about it.

I've got friends who make a consistent amount of money every month and they just hang out. I've got other friends who are 110% happy with their corporate jobs and their pay. In my opinion both of them "win".

I think that's what Gary is trying to get at here.. Whatever your goals are, whatever you want to do with your life, whatever your passion is.. do whatever you can possibly to reach those goals. Don't use excuses like I'm not talented, I'm not charismatic, I'm not smart enough, etc.

I agree with your views on the workaholism though, my dad is the exact same way!

(Gotta get back to crushing it! haha)

As Jim Rohn would say..."if you win 9/10 times I will beat you even though I may only win 1/10 times...because you see, you will probably only try 10 times and get 9, I will try 100 and get 10"
  • MarkH · 3 months ago
Gary, I have to be honest. Sam Bowie was drafted ahead of Jordan, but I'd argue, and I think anyone else would, Sam Bowie is more talented than Jordan. I'd also argue that I can tell a more interesting brand story than you. Even if you're up all night cranking away, I might come up with BK Whopper Sacrifice in 5 minutes. While I do appreciate the idea that hard work = success, if you don't have talent, you're gonna make a lot of noise and when everyone looks and sees what the commotion is, they''' see you're not really that awesome and they will look elsewhere. Unfortunately your bad example of Bowie vs. Jordan disproves your premise.
  • MarkH · 3 months ago
I also want to add that this premise is supposed to inspire people that might not have anything interesting to say to go ahead and shout, which means more clutter and ultimately more garbage for us all to wade through, in some ways this video is encouraging digital pollution. Honestly, dude, its a load of shiite. Good job!!!
  • Joe · 3 months ago
Yeah? What have you done lately?
  • steveborgman · 3 months ago
Gary, very well said. You've got to be hungry, and you've got to continuously give 100%. I believe Jordan was always doing this, and it made the difference. There are many thoroughbreds racing at the Kentucky Derby, and the winner wins by a razor thin margin. Hard work could be that razor thin advantage.

Michael Jordan is known perhaps as arguably the best NBA player of all time but not only was he talented, he was among one of the most hard working player of all time too. In fact, to quote him:

"My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength."

Good message! If you want something to happen in your life you need to MAKE it happen, and the only way to do that is to hustle! I personally don't have cable in my house and I don't waste allot of time watching TV anymore. Think about the things in your life that take up allot of your time and really isn't necessary and try to cut back on them.

Effort; ongoing effort is crucial. However, it isn't king. Hustle needs direction. The old adage of 'work smarter, not harder' holds a lot of truth. I've seen many people bust their butts for a very long time and not get a parallel return on their investment in time and energy.

All the hustle in the world without a concrete plan isn't going to work. "And then what?" needs to be kept in mind. Plan; short term, medium term and long term. Set goals, set time frames, set matrix to measure by.

If you are all hustle and create a big break are you ready to take this sudden golden opportunity to the next level? Should you suddenly open a door that takes you from a start-up entity to a business with the demand of a multi-year experience of operation are you positioned to handle it? If not, the house of cards is going to come tumbling down.

Work, in the right direction, is much more production that working in every direction. Your life needs balance; family commitments, current occupation, sleep (8-10 hours), friends, proper nutrition, non-work hobbies, etc. Without out those you burn out and crater.
  • Joe Clay · 3 months ago
All great points, especially about sleep and non-work hobbies.

As for hustling, Gary generally stresses hustling in the right direction. Like when he talks about using Twitter, he talks about using it in a focused way—not just trying to get in with everyone but getting in with the right people. He talks about getting involved in the online communities where you belong.
