Gary Vaynerchuk: Gary Vaynerchuk - Ego Searching or Caring? Gary Vaynerchuk debates...

  • wojtek · 1 year ago
you know gary, you're bloody right. The defining episodes for you imo.
  • Sam Rosen · 1 year ago
Nice Gary! I love the flip in context from ego searching to caring -- when you realize that the net is the world's greatest tool for listening and responding, it changes your relationship to the whole thing. Caring = Winning is a mantra that can't be repeated enough for all of us aspiring entrepreneurs.
  • Scott Williams · 1 year ago
Gret and inspiring as always. Got something cooking, and will let you know when I have content up next week.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
Gary I completely agree with you...you have to see what feedback people are giving about what you do :)
  • Dr. Horowitz · 1 year ago
I like how you say Vaynerchuk is a fucked up name... it reminds me of the Sarah Silverman video:

Great video, there is nothing wrong with an ego,if you've got it whynot flaunt it? :)
  • Gee · 1 year ago
Great points Gary... now I just wish some of my sites were big enough to get more hits in the search engines lol... but at least I'm getting there :-) That reminds me, I gotta go reply to a few dozen customer emails now! Thanks for the motivation.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
This is the number 1 thing to do if you care about what you do!
  • Griffin · 1 year ago
I totally agree! It's that little bit extra that keeps people around for the long haul. This is applicable in all industries/markets.

If you show your customers/audience you care only good things can come from it!

Do it up people go the extra mile! //g

Your name is gold my friend. Unique is awesome for urls and account names.
  • Michelle Evans · 1 year ago
You're so right! And the bigger your company gets the harder it is to seek out all the places you're being discussed, but it's definitely worth it. I have the good folks at Radian6 set up to show me an easier way I hear... I'm all ears. For now I'll just rock the Google Blog Search and Twitter Search and Technorati and such: The old fashioned way haha!
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Gary, I totally agree with you, but I think I threw up a little in my mouth during that intro song.

So true Gary! I look up my name all the time online to see what's going on and I read my email. Now, I'm not very popular yet so I don't have much to sift through, but I'd still do it even if I had millions of people talking about me!
  • Baker · 1 year ago
This is great. Thanks for sharing this stuff.
  • Danny Arrington · 1 year ago
Gary VEEEEE! Great video! I do this alot with standard search..but for whatever reason, I have not done this with blogs. So I did this tonight and guess what? You guessed it. I got people to thank and show appreciation to.

    Another winner Gary! Thanks!

    Great video Gary.

I was lucky enough to experience some Gary V "caring" the other day. To get a 140 character message from Gary showed me that he really cares about helping people that look up to him.

There was nothing in it for him other than helping someone, that someone just happened to be me.

If big companies did this, so much would change.

    Thanks man,

    Justin

Agree, but why spend so much time searching when you can set up email alerts from your google search?
  • John - Spa, Salon Marketing Gu · 1 year ago
    Great Tip Gary!

Just did it and was ablto to say thanks on over 20 blogs via their comments area. With of course a link back to my site.

Hadn't done this before... search blogs that is.

    Cheers,
    John
  • Luke Irvin · 1 year ago
    I couldn't agree more Gary!

I've searched blogs and I do enjoy it and find it interesting to see how many people link to other sites or even back to my own. It has sparked an interest in me and it's something I'm working on now.

Thanks so much for the tip!

    Thanks Gary:
Did what you suggested and Google is really killing it. Did anyone notice at the bottom of the search page that Google lets you stay updated by email alerts, a gadget, or blog search feed? Way to go Google...
  • catherine. · 1 year ago
first and foremost gary, that is exactly why i love you so much. you CARE.

the fact that you personally go through your emails and respond means so much to everyone who decides to email you. you recently became a follower of mine on twitter, and when i saw that you were following me i had a mega-smile on my face for like 4 days. the fact that you care about what i'm twittering means a lot to me. this is my favorite GV.com ever. i love you times ka-jillion!
  • Bobby Bo · 1 year ago
Gary, I had no idea there was a blog search, I totaly just learned something about my google bar. And I was just doing the regular google search like a shlub. Maybe some day someone will blog about me and I will find them with that blog search, and comment on their blog with some serious self praise. YES!

I will have to say this though G. There needs to be on the ground leadership with YOUR peeps, the ones that work for you. I know you dont leave them in the learch, time to blog on that aspect of the biz. You cant be on the computer all day and still run the battle on the ground... but then again, I never worked in a net based biz.
  • Bryan Bogensberger · 1 year ago
I am slightly confused. Is it taking hours a day because you find things like Google Alerts or Flitrbox.com don't work for you or is it that you have never heard of them (or does your name get mentioned 1000+ per day)?

As for the enterprise, the marketing, sales, PR, IR people have incredibly powerful monitoring systems available to them. DNA13 and Vocus are two that monitor all that is the web plus they even monitor TV streams and inbound press calls, etc. (at least DNA13 does).

Proactively managing your personal brand has never been easier and definitely should not take hours per day - IMHO.

Hey Gary, I heard about you by somebody posting one of your videos in a forum -- and I think I'll go thank them for that! Great advice you're giving out -- and I love your style of delivering it.

What struck me today is that people do link to my website through their blogs; I go visit to see what they say... but I never said (or wrote) anything to them, thinking they'd get creeped out, like I'm spying on them. But your Tylenol analogy hit home! From now on, I'm going to contact them, thank them and offer them up something for free!

    Thanks for being you,

    Suzanne

Hi Gary, (I'm WebOptimization from Twitter)

I'm thinking that the first video I saw with you I was like : What's this guy doing ? And why he is so enthusiastic ? But after I've watched few other videos and after I find out who he is and after he responded to my e-mails and to my DMs on Twitter I've become a Gary Vaynerchuk Fan. I show his videos to my friends and I think we all would like to be able to talk with so much passion in front of a video camera.

So, yes, Gary really cares. It's not just small talk. He really answers to your e-mail.

    Thank you
  • Dan Fontaine · 1 year ago
You've mentioned the Google Blog Search before and I actually took the advice. As a comedian, I've been reading and commenting on stand up comedy blogs and it's amazing how just giving someone else some feedback will motivate them to check your stuff out and spread the word. GV at his best.
  • Andrew Mager · 1 year ago
This makes me care a lot.

    Thanks for the inspiration Gary.

Hey Gary - thanks for this latest video! I may or may not have lifted it for my own blog so that my clients could read and learn. ;)

And now I have a good excuse for constantly searching myself on multiple search engines before I do my bookkeeping and file my receipts.

But really, I'm glad you are telling people that they should care. I think most people just don't know how to care in this new Web 2.0 world. Thanks for a great video post.

Gary: Albert Gaulden's book released last week called “You’re Not Who You Think You Are” discusses a lot about the ego. Find it at http://tinyurl.com/5wrey8.

Chapter two reads..."just as the ego, your lower self, has its own heinous modus operandi when unchecked or unchallenged, you middle self, the open-minded part of you, is able to attract people, circumstances, books, concepts and principles that stir the soul awake.

"The goal is an ego that co-exists with a healthy conscience. The first techniques I (Albert) suggest to bring your ego into balance are visualization and dialogue. They will help to reach a part of you that has been hidden from you for much of your life."

I have been struggling with my 2 jobs, fam, etc. to get my blog and sideline biz advanced. But I know I will. I have to because it's not about ego. Because if I don't care about my own good name/brand/etc., NO ONE will.

BTW, you think you have an f'ed-up name? Try having one that's named after a blood-sucking parasite! :)

    Cheers!

    Awesome Gary!
You hit this one out of the park! So true!
We also spend hours and hours Searching. And it is because we can, and want to connect anyone that needs help or thank anyone who loves what we do.

We also use www.bloglines.com - it searches blogs that google blog search does not.

But, we are always monitoring, because we want to hear what people have to say and listen to give them better and better customer service.

Thanks Gary for sharing this! This is an important message!

Hi, I wanted to ask a question over at winelibrary but could not find a link, etc and I really don't want to join Facebook just to ask a Q... SO, do you sell the wine airpump online? I know I can purchase at other sites but if you sell them, I'd rather get it from you.

    Thanks a bunch!

O, if you DO sell them, will you ship to FPO AE 09622? We live in Italy and rely on the MPS for our US mail. ~thanx

Agreed, agreed, agreed all the way! All this contrived 'branding' guff can only take you so far; the real meat is in working out who is talking about you and giving them love. You've been a real inspiration to me in terms of how I write my blog content. Thank you.

    Hey gary,
I do this everyday for my company. If they are your users, you need to care about them or else you don't have a successful product. It comes down to the golden rule, treat them how you want to be treated. If someone is stoked on my product, I will send them a shirt and a thank you note. That way you have a fan and brand advocate for life.

    Gary,

I know that you're opposed to having people help you respond to your vayniacs but I think you should hire a virtual assistant or two to manually check this stuff for you and give you daily/weekly updates. I think that would be a much more efficient use of your time and money.

I just started watching your videos at wine library TV and noticed the link to your website. I recently got into wine, especially champagne. I'm 37 so I'm coming to it later than most but I am enjoying the bubbles and your daily wine episodes have been a blast. Now that I've been to your website I can say I also agree with your world view. Stay true to who you are and you can't go wrong! Do some shows on cavas, Spain just seems to be doing so many things right recently.

Love this topic! We were just talking about the importance of google/twitter searching and helping find anything from brand mentions to backhistory on a new date. HI Gary,

I am just *hearing* you for the first time in this video (linked from Chris Brogan's post today (Dec 29)) - and wow, i love your passion and enthusiasm! You've got a unique style and i'm going to keep reading through your site to find more cool posts. Love what you're saying here... but for those people/businesses who don't have the time or haven't put the time in to listen, what actionable steps would you put out there for them?

(thanks for reading my comment :)

    cheers.

Great vid... keep em' coming bro!

I would definitely call it 'ego searching' ;)
  • CaseyLee · 11 months ago

  • Doug Cook · 11 months ago
    Gary,

Interesting thoughts. I see a lot of "ego-searching" on Able Grape. Agreed, "caring" is cool, but not all ego-searching is necessarily caring.

When I see somebody dig deep into the results (far past their own site), or filter by blogs, then yes, there's someone who cares. And when I see that they query for other wine-related topics, then I think, "wow, there's someone who cares about their customers, and is actually passionate and curious about wine, too." There really are a few people like this, and it's great to see.

Sadly, though, I see a lot of "ego searching" on Able Grape that doesn't seem to be about keeping in touch with customers. People are often looking for their own sites, and just want to see if they're present and rank highly in searches. They come, they do one search for themselves, verify their presence or non-presence, and they go away (and then sometimes I get an email asking them to add me to the search engine). At least judging by their search behavior, I wouldn't say these people "care" either about their customers or about wine. It's a little disheartening, really!

Well, as long as you care....if you're listening...I'd love to see more color on your web sites...some girl color, in fact - something from a blue/chocolate/chartreuse palette would be ok. The brown tone is getting ho-hum...like an old leather lounge chair in someone's basement. Think of it like this...you sense flavors in everything you do, feel, touch. I sense the visual images. In the same way that you taste a rock - I smell the brown tones on your web sites. My visual palette craves as much as your taste palette. And my visual memory is equal to your taste memory (well, maybe not yours...). Feed the visual among us...and the rest will benefit, too.

  • mieke boogert · 11 months ago
Wow! Your amazing. Found you when I was googling around.
I just wrote a little text about the problem that companies aren't listening anymore to consumers. And that it's a shame. Because they do have a voice that can be heard trough internet. And you CAN LISTEN TO THEM.
Because if you ignore people. I do believe they will ignore you in the end. End you end up loosing.
Brilliant!! You told it brilliant!! Better. Love it.
