OMG -- This is such a timely message.
    Thank you GV!

Great points, Gary. I think the other real key, the thing that makes the small victories more palatable and easier to savor, is something else that you've preached about: You have to be doing something that you're passionate about and that is true to your DNA. If you're doing that, than any victory, however small, is huge.

As a college student with big dreams and hoping to open my own online business, this video has given me new insight into building my brand. You have honestly influenced me on building your personal brand and hopefully your tips pay off :)
  • Pete W · 1 year ago
I'm in the process of building a new business at the moment. I used to contract and got to be pretty successful with that, but now I'm doing this, and it's so true. You start over again, and you take every little thing you can get, no matter how 'beneath' you it might be, because if it gets you closer to where you want to go, it was worth it.

Awesome post man. Have a sweet day! Oh, and send my regards to Andre and his lady :)
  • Erik Kastner · 1 year ago
The teachers in school used to tell me to submit ANYTHING b/c ANYTHING was better than zero (they'd go so far as to show me that if I got 100 on a test, but zero on a homework, my average is 50)... LIARS all of them :)
  • Adnan Dervisevic · 1 year ago
Some really important points there, Gary. I think you totally hit your nail on the head, and I'll take your advice with me when I make my next project ^^

Very true ChrisClark PASSION drives success. PASSION is what makes me follow a lot of people like Garyvee, Kevin Rose, Leo Laporte, Chris Pirillo, and everybody out there that is actually doing what they are passionate about. Keep it up guys!

Thanks Gary, this is just what I needed to hear at this moment!
  • Tzechiu Lei · 1 year ago
    Great principle, Gary! KUDOS!! :D

Just gotta do my best with what I got, right here, right now.

Ain't waiting for that red-carpet to roll out to me. :D
  • Trav · 1 year ago
Your success I believe is attributed to this. The fact that you are so personal in your business sets you apart from alot of other web 2.0'ers.
  • Nick Pettit · 1 year ago
Dripping with truth. I take things that are "below" me all the time. People forget that every little bit helps!

Even if you just exchange links with someone that doesn't have that great of a site, it might rock their world enough for them to say good things about you. I'm glad there's people like you out there, Gary, that don't let their ego get in the way of reality.
  • Cesar Torres · 1 year ago
This is an awesome video, Gary. Great advice for any startup, tech or otherwise. Keep 'em coming (or write a business book next, hah).
  • Marian Elbert · 1 year ago
    (n number of little victories) - (t hours whining/unsavoring/sleeping) = (x big victories)

Although I'm not going into business or plan on becoming someone big in the tech world, those little victories can happen to everyone in any setting. Sometimes it's hard to see them when so much is going on, but recognizing those can give you the momentum to get where you REALLY want to be.
  • mattgrass · 1 year ago

"Hustling your face off!" Love it! That's great, Gary! It kind of makes me think of how I feel about MySpace. I've slowly been building up my community there over the years, mostly for 'personal' social reasons, but, the audience I have there now (when I stay active there) is good, you know? People think, 'Myspace? What can Myspace do for your biz?' But I think it is a great tool. Not to mention a great place to hook up with cousins, school friends, etc.

And Ustream shows, they are so great, even the minimally-attended ones!

Great advice. Patience is second only to talent. Everything else can be acquired.
  • David Dadekian · 1 year ago
Very good point, Gary. Thank you for putting it so succinctly. Sometimes I wonder if I give that monetary break too often, but with years like this it's what everyone's looking for. I need better hustling discipline.

Great video! Some very good points. I see far too many of my customers and business associates trying to "get rich quick". I believe in taking your time and building a business one solid brick at a time.

Best quote of the video by far was "...tiny squirrel like moves...". LOL!
  • Anthony LaVista · 1 year ago
Gary, very good advice. Building blocks, piece by piece is the only path to success.

Great thoughts there. It kind of goes well with your post about the personal brand gold rush and why you shouldn't wait for anything and grab everything you can, NOW.
  • howlr5 · 1 year ago
    Gary,

You have spoken some wise words here today. If more people thought the way you do I think everyone could be successful.
If you really enjoy what you are doing there should be no duties that are below you.

    Keep on Rocking the Wisdom.

  • Andrew Roger · 1 year ago
Its so true. Just get another link out there, another touch, answer every freakin email, and take that crappy $25/mn ad because that's $25/mn you don't have and can't leverage. It'll all give you clout with advertisers and connections with fans.
  • LucidNewYork · 1 year ago
Yes, you never know what this "$100 sponsorship" becomes. I own a wholesale jewelry business and I remember accepting an order placed by two girls in their early twenties with pink highlights and their baseball hats backwards. Their order was for about $100, which for a wholesaler means it probably costs more to process... I treated their order just like everyone else's.

Well now the 2 girls just opened a second store in Cali and buy large quantities...

"Better than Zero", Gary, well said!
  • Strat Parrott · 1 year ago
Thanks, gary this is the perfect pointer.

    Gary,

This message is really valuable to me. I live in a country with little opportunities in the web businesses, but I love the web. My dream is to move to the U.S and do a online business over there and later move it to my country. The only thing i was doing wrong was not starting. We are starting right now, looking for a university to go to in the US and by starting our own Video Blog to gather ideas and build our own brand. Even if we are here right now, so we will have something for when we get there. Thanks for inspiring us! And we, with a little bit of you will keep bringing the Thunder not only to the Wine World, but to the Whole of it (the world).
  • LucidNewYork · 1 year ago
BTW I love the girl/guy ratio of folks who post the comments, is it how it's gonna be on the Thunder Cruise, LOL
  • T.J. Clark · 1 year ago
You're not only changing the wine world, GV, you are changing the media, web, celebrity, business, and lifestyle world too. Having three kids myself, I love it that you are a family man, too.

I'm 30 and I often feel that the dreams I had in my 20s may never happen, but you make me feel like anything is possible as long as I'm willing to work hard and just create. Keep on keeping on.

Thanks for the honest and inspiring words, Gary.
  • Snubs · 1 year ago
Great information, specially for IPTV people. I'm still figuring this stuff out, and I get uber excited whenever a new person joins our Hak5 facebook fan club. Every bit counts, right? :D
  • Victor · 1 year ago
This is so spot on, Gary. I think there are so many folks out there that are so antsy and want to light a fire their venture and make it explode when what they may need to do is nurture it for a while, make it strong at its foundation. Looking too far into the future as opposed to what is 5 feet in front of them. Rock and roll, Gary...keep it coming.
  • Chris Tisdale · 1 year ago
Thank you for this. I need to hear it for the sake of my stagnant creative side, and my wife is starting a business, and what you say here perfectly compliments how she's already been planning her attack.

I too need better 'hustling discipline' (well put, David) but little inspirations like this help with that a lot.

    Thanks again.
  • Zak · 1 year ago
Seriously I cant thank you enough for doing what you do. The amount of work you do on the side for other people is amazing. This along with many other post have been heavy things on my mind lately. Its good to find clarity through the ideas of others. Thank You.

    hi Gary!!!

Liz Murray taught me that anything is better than zero... in real life as well as business... if you don't know who she is people, go ahead and google her and read her story... she came down to CR for a YPO weekend last year (my idea, :) ) and knocked our socks off!!!!!

Thanks once again! You're insights are truly awesome! I hope you'll never forget about us little guys.
  • Bill Wilson · 1 year ago
Good advice, Gary--but I'm surprised you have the energy to hustle your face off. Seriously, dude, get some of those energy drinks and start using them. You're way too laid back.

(That was, of course, humorously said, for those who didn't get it.)

I'm in the process of rebuilding the Wine For Newbies brand since I gave up the podcast last year. I'm not sure that podcasting will be a part of Wine For Newbies 2.0, but other good stuff for wine education will be.

Your points are encouraging. Thanks! Maybe I'll hit you up for some cheap advertising/sponsorship. :-)

This was an awesome post. I find you to be an amazing speaker. It is amazing how the obvious is missed by so many looking for the next big thing before they even have the current thing they are looking to achieve.

Reminds me of Pacino "bringing Thunder" in Any Given Sunday -

"The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
    every minute, every second."

    Sage advice.
  • Ryne Nelson · 1 year ago
Gary, dominant post. When did you first realize this better than zero was the way? I totally agree, but there has to be a moment when it just kicked in...hard.
  • Gregory Schnese · 1 year ago
    Gary,

Good video. I was feeling a little down before I saw this vid, but now I'm pumped up again. I work at http://www.beYOU.tv, a fitness and wellness video community. Starting a business is no joke, it takes a ton of work. I love the better than 0 idea.

I'll get back to work tomorrow and leverage the crap outta what I have and hit this He-Man style!

If i would have seen this video about 3 years ago I would have probably stuck with my first web business! It had slow but steady growth and with a little bit of effort on my part it probably would have become a nice little business!
  • pamslim · 1 year ago
Gary, this is one of the many, many, many reasons why I love you so much (in a happily married to my wonderful husband kind of way ;)

You are so real and full of heart and grounded in reality that I always get a gigantic smile on my face when I watch your videos.

I have always been uncomfortable, and sometimes revolted, by the internet marketing strategists that push to charge more, more, more for my time and to spend less time connected to the people who are at the heart of my audience.

Would it be fun to cavort with celebrities at fancy parties? Maybe. But infinitely more fun is knowing that something I wrote, or a free conversation I had with a frustrated computer programmer in Iowa made a difference.

I am all for setting up a healthy business model, but scrapping and hustling is not just good for biz, it is good for the soul.

Much love and power to you and your message -- it is what we need to hear.

    -Pam

Gary - about others asking you "why would you do that guest video blog post for that Alexa 3 million?"

Some who also started at Alexa 3m get to the top, and then they're "above that stuff." Thanks for staying grounded and not acting like an "emperor". Hustling...

I love your energy. You are right everything is better than zero. I love this principle! Thanks for sharing!
  • MIchael Jenkins · 1 year ago
    Gary,

Excellent post.. "More than Zero" is a great way of labeling the phenomenon of stacking constant small improvements to get where you want to go. The Japanese have been using this idea..they call it Kaizen..with great success in manufacturing for years. This is why Toyota is dominating while GM, Ford, and Chrysler continue to look for huge changes to quickly get back on top. The secret is that Toyota has been making micro changes for 30 years....and THEY ADD UP!

I loved your show, but the love has ended. Erik Marcus, the guy who sent you the Vegan.com shirt is an author and one of the friendliest activist out there. Your show and his show I hold in the highest regards. He is to the vegan podcast movement what your are to the wine vid-cast movement. I don't appreciate you making fun of him by wearing that shirt and eating bacon. I'm done with your show, but will check back occasionally to see if you if you decide to do a Vegan Wine Tasting show some day. My heart is hurt man.

VERY COOL. This message came at the perfect time. I actually just set up my plans today to deal with the fact that less than 10% of people win the thirty day challenge (a challenge to make your 1st dollar online)... which got me thinking.. this could take 10x longer than I expected. It could be a long and hard road. I prepared for that and it was really cold, but you said it - you fight for every inch of ground and you'll make it. Thanks Man.

There are no shortcuts in life. It's the great hustle that gets goals accomplished. Thanks for putting it out there.

    OBTW - *Confession 2.0*

I am not into wine tasting. However, I watch every show. I respect your hustle and your passion. You could be talking about index cards, and I would find it interesting. Its the authentic love for what you are doing that inspires me, and makes me want to watch. I get it brother.

    Keep up the good work.

Building business is indeed about doing rather than not doing but personality has a lot to do with it too. You engage with people on a personal level as well as a professional level, yet you still keep the focus on the work at hand. People deal with people, not ideas. Your personality is what people want a piece of!

Gary, you are a true genius. I just stumbled onto this video because I am ashamed to say I don't follow this blog, just wine library tv. Well that won't be the case anymore, because the things said in this video are epic. You really are an awesome guy and can't wait to meet you.

  • lionelane · 11 months ago
Thanks for retweeting this. It's a great message for all of us who are looking at the social media superstars and wondering how we can achieve that level. Start slow and do you. Be the best you can be and do the thing that you do best and keep your nose to the grindstone.
Let them be them, admire them but don't be jealous. If you do it right, it could be you one day.
    You nailed it, my friend.
  • David Siteman Garland · 11 months ago
Awesome re-tweet, Gary. It is very true and people (I'm usually one of them) expect instantaneous results or some kind of quick gratification...like a drug. Passion and patience pull you through every time. When I first launched my TV show, I never thought it was going to make it onto ABC...but it did.

It could be a day. It could be a month. It could a year. Keep fighting!
  • Ryan Roylance · 11 months ago
    Flip Mino, Cool!
Great stuff. We are an instant gratification society for sure, and tat patience is something soooo many of us lack. Great stuff. I am doing a sort of similar vlog called Starting Up a Startup at www.royalants.com, and your energy and passion are inspiring. Shameless self promotion aside, GREAT STUFF and thank you!
