"Put your head down and CRUSH IT!" GREAT advice by Gary V. Great video my friend!

I agree, not one cookie cutter method for success. Don't try and be someone else. Great vid Gary!!

wow you totally hit the nail on the head with this one.......guilty!
  • Andrew Brown · 11 months ago
Awesome post Gary! I think you may get some negativity on they way you technically used the word "listening" but its the concept that makes a lot of sense.
  • Kris C · 11 months ago
Thanks for saying this!! I couldn't wait for a new video for the New Year and people really underestimate how their unique characteristics are what make up a unique personality (or brand.)

Missed you lately!!! Gimme, gimme more. :-))))

    Happy New Year!
  • Mairo Vergara · 11 months ago
Very nice video. Sometimes listen to yourself can be really hard. Some people just can't do it, because they see themselves as other people see them, you know what I mean? What mister X will think about me if I do that? Why don't do this or that way instead of my way? I just graduated at the University and I can guarantee: University is the king when it comes to "don't trust yourself". Everybody is right but you at the University. Hopefully I graduated last year, now it's time to look for a job. Wish me luck!

When I read on TechCrunch that advertising on content sites was going down a lot on 09 my gut told me no it is not. Sounded like you have the same reaction.
  • Bryan Roth · 11 months ago
Wow. So very true Gary. Great motivation!
  • Ryan Stephens · 11 months ago
    Gary,

I think a reason so many people are scared to listen to themselves is that if they do not succeed they only have themselves to blame. It's a lot easier to point fingers if you listen to others, worry too much about metrics, etc.

This show reminds me a lot of one of Seth's November posts, The You Show
  • Ken Yeung · 11 months ago
Awesome video, Gary. Hit it right on the head once again. Everyone is always asking to do what their competitor is doing because it's so successful. But you're right...what your competitor does, isn't going to be the same with you. Wonder if people will think you're copying them because you don't have any original thoughts?

But it's all about you engaging your customers...anything else would be...well...not keeping it real.

  • ecc1977 · 11 months ago
Ryan Stephens makes a superb point: "It's a lot easier to point fingers..."

Great video as usual, Gary. And timely for me, as well. I was just sitting here doubting a decision (for a moment, but still) I made about my blog. But I made the decision because I was listening to myself, and you've reminded me that's a good thing to do.
  • Matt Holmes · 11 months ago
    Gary,
Nice man I have been wondering where the videos went. But I love the info its like what I do with training I get outside ideas and knowledge along with what I am doing and if I feel that I do not like it or something with that training is wrong thats what I go with. And I need to start doing that with my business as well not everything that works for you or someone else might work for me and if I do not like it then dont do it. KILLER!
  • Martin Wedgwood · 11 months ago
I wasn't listening but from your facial expression and nonverbal communication it was very impressing and inspiring.

My intuition tells me I should learn to listen to myself the exact same way you do. LOL.

Thanks alot and keep it up,
    cheers Martin
  • Derrick Schommer · 11 months ago
I agree to a point, there are many folks that "think" they are right and are not doing it correctly. If you don't know what you're doing, learning from others is a great start.

I know folks that think they know what they're doing, they make a short term plan for "success" and fall flat on their face. They've got a character flaw, they listen to advice from those that have done it and have been successful and then go and do the opposite thing because they think _they_ are right.

You can listen to yourself, or trust yourself when it comes to many gray areas of decision making - but without listening to others you're going to fall on your face a few times before you get it right. You'll learn a lot in doing so, but to trust yourself you have to know yourself and your own flaws. Sometimes, it pays to take some advice from others and mold it to fit your own life.

In your analogy, I may take the advice from a few others on what brand of shoe feels the best and lasts the longest. Once I've done that I can try on a size in that brand that fits me perfectly.
  • Chris Bartow · 11 months ago
I'm always reminded of this when I get suggestions on my web site. They always say that they want this feature or that feature that they have elsewhere.

I have to tell myself that my decisions over the last 3 years made the site what it is, not the people that just started using it last month.
  • Brian Remmel · 11 months ago
    Happy New Year Gary!

Great to see another video after the holiday hiatus. Keep em' coming.
  • Kiel Holliday · 11 months ago
    Gary,

It does make sense, I believe that people are talkers and copiers that they do not understand, the fact that hustling is the only way to go and the need now to crush the things and ignore the stereotype of "sayers" and not "doers".
  • DaleK · 11 months ago

    Wow!

I think this is one of the best GV's yet.

It's simple and direct, if you can trust yourself then who can you trust.

Your gut will reflect your passion and if you don't follow your passion then failure will be the end result.

    Thanks Gary,

  • ike · 11 months ago
Speaking of listening to other people... There's a book called the Luck Factor written by one of the world's most respected scientists, by the name of Richard Wiseman. He spent the better part of a decade scientifically dissecting the reason why fully 2/3rds of all people believe they have consistent luck, and why it is that most of those people believe they have "good luck". One of the key ingredients is listening to your own gut intuition. And incidentally meditation can improve your intuition as well.

Thank you, Gary! I say this all the time. Read (or listen) to the "tips" and take what you can use. But why listen to me (or you, ha!)? Seriously though, I'm glad you're back on this site too. Thanks.

Hey I have those shoes. Nice shoes! I love your energy man. business is frickin simple! Just let it be simple. work hard and kick ass! no short cuts. just stop looking for a quick route and go to work.
  • Paul Stonier · 11 months ago
Good Point. However, I still find it important to follow my RSS's and et cetera, but it's how you approach it. You can't look to others for THE ANSWER or a formula. That does require intuition and independent thinking. Just like wine, it's about balance in keeping up with the game and making a contribution.
  • Dana Fosburgh · 11 months ago
My gut tells me that I'm not going to get hurt by listening to what you have to say. If the only thing I take away is that it's all about passion, then it has been time well spent.
    Thanks.

I just read a great article about this on Brazen Careerist this afternoon. Here is the link --

    http://www.brazencareerist.com/2009/01/03/how-t...

I agree that intuition is super important, and we should be using other people's opinions and ideas and checking them against ourselves and doing what feels right!
  • JR Moreau · 11 months ago
Haven't watched much WLTV lately, but I'm LOVING this post. So fricken true! Play your DNA bro.
  • MattjDrake · 11 months ago
Great post - Definitely agree with the main point of trusting yourself. I am still remember a particular failed project where I tried to do a major system someone else's way when I knew deep down inside it was wrong. We ended up throwing an entire system out a year later because I did not trust my gut feeling.

But, I do think that people find some value in "top whatever" lists. At the very least, information like that is easier to digest. Of course, you have to evaluate it all for yourself.

    Good video!
  • josh lauritch · 11 months ago
great words of wisdom to start the new year! thanks for pouring yourself into others...i'm learning a lot from you about lovin' people and serving others! thanks bro!
  • DavidTurnbull · 11 months ago
Great video, although I'm still a big fan/advocate of reading books about business etc. The information definitely has to be adapted by yourself to your own business, but for like $10-$20 you can get someones years of experiences in a couple of hundred pages - it's a great way to get some inspiration, or avoid common pitfalls that you were unaware of.
  • Milos · 11 months ago
    Welcome back Gary!

First off while I agree that people need to listen to their own inner voice, their intuition and work off their experience, it is important to keep an eye out on the rest of the particular industry in order to capitalize on their mistakes.

Do your own thing, but be aware of what others around you are doing. There might be examples where you can learn from them as well as seize on their missed opportunities.

Keep doing what you do best Gary!
  • jaybaer · 11 months ago
If everyone listens to themselves, how will we social media consultants stay in business. ;) Seriously, good post. The echo chamber effect is getting pretty overwhelming, and especially given how fast the game is changing, listening to to other people at the exclusion of your own gut is crazy. Clearly, there are people that can help. But, people trying to find magic beans in a blog post or on Twitter are looking for something that doesn't exist.
  • Dan Fontaine · 11 months ago
well put. i often times will offer ideas to friends to get their take and too often their reaction makes me shy away from action. thanks GV.
  • Lee · 11 months ago
Great message. I tell my 11 and 13 year old all the time that the only person they are in competition with is themselves. And White Castles rule!
  • Sam With Traffic Is King · 11 months ago
    GV,

I'll be the first to say I am occasionally guilty of looking for that magic recipe to get certain results for my business. It's hard to listen to yourself sometimes when you want to model your business after successful people who have done it already. Sometimes you think if you do exactly what they did you can achieve similar results. Maybe there should be a balance of using what you have learned from others and making more judgments based on gut instinct and intuition. BTW looking at stats can be very distracting and a productivity killer. Can't help it though.
  • Ryan Evans · 11 months ago
    Agreed.
  • Standard Toaster · 11 months ago
What if myself tells me to listen to other people.....BOOM your head just exploded.
  • nathanbush · 11 months ago
I don't agree on this one Gary. There's a huge difference between listening and following (usually blindly). There's no harm listening to as many people as you can it's when you follow that info blindly that you are not doing it for yourself. You might find that from listening, reading, observing a number of different approaches you can use them to mesh or inspire a new way of thinking. Nice thought starter.
  • howlr5 · 11 months ago
    Gary,

This is going to be a great year and I want to thank you for all of the incredible content on GV.com and WLTV.
  • Gilberto Prujansky · 11 months ago
    Hey Gary!
I dont think everybody have that creative inner voice having all the great ideas and telling you all the time what to do. Maybe sometimes they must copy-cat the neighbor to see if that fits them. What every people should have is the awareness, and a good timing, to realize if this or that method is not going to work with you.
I think is great to look over the fence, analyse that, meditate about it, and decide if it fits you or not. The problem is: this steps should take you no more than 1 sec! Or the cat wont jump! LOL
  • Gilberto Prujansky · 11 months ago
Something more: Its good to get experience from your failures, but if you can get experience from anybody elses failure, is even better! ;-)
Everybody try to read about the successfull people, but it would be great to read about their failures before the success!

    PREACH ON BROTHER!

Dude especially cuz, not all, but the majority (99.9999% will steer you down a path that introduces a gazillion methods and then they try to sell you an ebook/course to learn how to implement each method the "Right Way".

Guy I am sick of "150 Page Reports" or 2 hours powerpoint on how to do something that takes "3 Fcukin Minutes"... CMON! Perfect example... Building "Squidoo Lenses". It takes literally 3 minutes and is fill in the blanks but yet you will pay $150 for a 150 page report that is "snapshots of every "module" (blank space you need to complete).

    1. Most of the dudes teaching this "Marketing stuff", you know "GURUUU'S" learned all their shiot from Tony Robbins and Direct Mail "Guru's" in the 19080's and now make it seem like they have all the answers with their "rehashed 1980's BS". You better off going to Robbins yourself. Believe me...

    2. They want to complicate the shiznit out of things to make you feel that its so complicated you need to spend $400-3k on their course.

    3. Most of them never made a DAMN DIME or a SINGLE CENT doing anything other than selling us (their suckers) how to do "Internet Marketing".

    4. Why do you think they are all pushing for you and I to "Create Info Products"? Because you need to learn how to...

    - write and ebook (basically become an author)
    - become such an expert that people will pay to listen to you
    - become a "Copywriter" to learn how to write a 40 page Salesletter that "ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WILL READ"
    - become a "web designer" to create your "Squeeze/Opt-in Page
    - And the list goes on my friends

Listen on my blog (My URL: I would give it but you don't need it cuz you get all the great info you need right here)
there is only 1 person I tell me pepe's about and its this blog right here and Gary V.

So if your here reading this then you are already on the right path.

Quick Tip: I just discovered the "Personal Branding Online Treasure" blog a few days ago and if you did too then do yourself a favor and "SUBSCRIBE TO THE RSS FEED".

I suggest you use "Google Reader" to control "all" your feeds and this way you will have a simple list (no pics or anything til you open 1) of every show Gary has done since DAY 1!

There is more info on here then I have gotten from $10k courses. NO JOKE! THIS IS THE SHIOT RIGHT HERE... PERIOD!

When you want to comment (which you should to show your love for this "sick content" and for your boy Gary V from within Google Reader just click the "Title of the Post" and bang your here...

I know this was madd long but this is what I do and I am trying to just really emphasize how valuable this advice and superior knowledge Gary is throwing at you is...

He doesn't have some course or ebook to sell you. This is straight up from the heart and you will not find this anywhere else (expect for me but thats only cuz I learn from the best).

All kidding aside listen to Gary, TAKE ACTION and

"You Will Win From Here On In".

    Later,

our society is all about the instant gratification, hence the popularity of those stupid link bait titles...top ten ways to grow an online wine empire, five tips you need to dominate twitter now...etc.

it's absurd to think that someone could absorb and learn anything of value when information is presented this way, but we read it anyway. we look for that secret tip, trick, hack, firefox plugin...whatever.

gary, you are cranking out common sense content that is desperately needed. hard work, leaning your shit, doing what you love, dedication, focus being you etc...that is only way to "crush it." well done my friend, well done.

  • Ian · 11 months ago
It seems most of those commenting are missing the point, saying things along the lines of "yes everybody is unique" while being unique is not the point being made.

It is good to get advice from others who have succeeded, but you should always question that advice and consider who it comes from.

The key point being made here is to do what you feel is right for you, to listen to your instinct, to do what comes natural for you. That is probably not playing games or watching TV because neither will give you any real ongoing satisfaction for a period of time.

Ryan Stephens and Rod (among others) do seem aware of the point being made.

Great video! It has become clear to me, that I need to stay focused on my own goals and my own ways to achieve them. But that being said, listening to others is helpful too. In my opinion, not listening to anyone is a bit naïve and arrogant. How are you going to learn what has already been done and what works when you don't know what others have done. You may even learn from their mistakes or realize what you definitely don't want to do...

I'm not saying you should let other dictate the way you run your business/blog/whatever and from a personal point you'll probably never become satisfied with your business if you choose to run it that way. But I still think you need some inspiration or ideas from others before you can really start to set things on fire
  • CaseyLee · 11 months ago

crap, you're right! Next time I let someone tell me how my blog or site should be, I will have one hand up ready to smack them in the face. And that's just it, I have to allow myself to express myself the way I want and how I feel it would work for me. Let myself do things that feel right, instead of what I'm told IS right. good vid. • Laura · 11 months ago
I'll say it again. It's Not The Plan, people. It's The People. Plans do not create....people create. When someone like Gary Vee has been so successful at something they HOUND him to death for the book "How I Did It". Work (or______) is created by people not plans - not a process. When something amazing is created by people - they look back and say, "Hey, this is the process...because it worked." - But it is Never the process...the Value is always in the People. If more influencers sold the idea that it's your people/workers/self who have all the value - we'd have a much happier work world.

Is there value in advice from people who have succeeded - Absolutely. But is there a Plan to Follow - absolutely not. Motivating the masses to trust themselves with business ideas and decisions might be a bit of a utopian stretch....but that's part of the entrepreneurial optimism.

    It's definitely Selflessness.

Teaching biz to recognize that the real value of their co. is the "value of people" is a huge cultural switch. Right now biz is still focused on objects - they miss the point...on how work is created.
  • Susan · 11 months ago
Enjoyed the new vid, and agree with your message.

I especially feel if you don't listen to, or go with your gut, someone else will take that moment from you - run off with the idea you were only thinking about and leave you shaking your head.

Of course there's the opposite side of the spectrum: the copycats. I can't tell you how many meetings I've been to where the CEO says something and the kiss-up in the room blurts out: "I was just gonna say that!" or "that's exactly what I was just thinking!" Please.

So, speaking of going with your gut - I have to say this: The typo in your title is driving me nuts! (s/b shoe, right?) And the fact that your right sleeve is pushed up and your left one isn't is also getting to me - but that's just the OCD talking.

    Thanks for the voice.

    Re-purposing comments:

-taken from Liz Strauss' blog "Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Chris Brogan!" http://is.gd/eJa6

    I said:
"It’s ok to isolate & implement qualities that inspire you about a person such as Chris Brogan but you have to sit back and ask yourself, “How do I make myself unique?” Let’s not forget those that try to out shout Gary Vaynerchuk or the endless Zefrank’s on youtube. Good people in their own right but they haven't sat and searched out who they are."
  • mieke boogert · 11 months ago
Wow! (again.) This is really what I do believe in.
But I also believe that listening to other people can bring you further.
As long as it fit's your shoes. You just need to take what fit's your shoes and leave the rest. I think that is sometimes the problem that I see.
To leave behind/ don't write down what you don't think is good.
Keeping your own intuition on top of it.
My intuition tells me that it's good to watch your blog-video's.
I will remember what fits me. :-)

I'm not a biz person just a nurse, wife and mom BUT that video rang true for being a volunteer at kids classroom, being a team parent etc. Reminded me of the book good to great and the message in that book weren't all about nucor steel or kimberly clark or walgreens but about being ones personal best in your own life. Dude you are so great on so many levels and being the sommelier wannabe that I am your wisdom and tips have helped me evolve into having a pretty darn good wine cellar and ability to entertain well. thanks so much!..nikki meek Boise, Idaho

Touche. I totally relate to the "not a tie guy" thing in your video.

@Chetz - "Success" is again a different shoe for everyone. People measure success in different ways.

@Laura - Wholeheartedly agree. There is a culture in companies of valuing success, ignoring the fact that success is the people.

It's taken me 10 years of working in a cramped environment with no freedoms (hey that sounds like jail!) to realise that this isn't my way.. so Thank you Gary for the good advice and kick in the ass!

Nothing wrong with listening to yourself but saying to not listen to anyone else? Can't go with you on that one. I might ultimately make a decision based on my gut but I listen to lots of people.

    Wow! Great video Gary.

I do, however, believe listening to others can't do harm. Yes, you should make your own decisions and not blindly follow others, but learning from others mistakes or successes won't hurt.

Overall, great message and another great video. Kudos!

    HI Gary!
I was stuck in a wine rut on Cabs until I started watching your podcast and now I am so far beyond that. For that I thank you and your enthusiasm for what you do. I am a little disappointed that you have not discussed the termination of Eric Mangini fom the Jets Fan point of view on the podcast. Being a Cleveland fan, I am excited and think that Eric was prematurely let go from the Jets. We are happy to have him, but I really would love to know the skinny and your rating on the firing from a solid Jets fan. You can translate the Wine Enthusiast scoring model into the Football Enthusiasts model. 87+?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Okay, I get it. Trust myself and be myself. Said with tons of energy over and over again.

Any other business advice in this rant?

So I catch myself frequently yelling at the hordes of Vaynerheads, or whatever you call yourselves. I'm decrying your putting this guy on a pedestal, setting this guy up as some all-knowing, all-seeing guru. The actual gurus of Hinduism were little tyrants; each sought to make a mob of enslaved clones of himself, to follow around and have them do his bidding. You don't want a guru. Gary V doesn't deserve gurus. Don't mimic this guy! He doesn't know what you know!

What's that? Gary agrees with me?

    That BASTARD! (hehe)
